Technological developments are reshaping the energy sector. This is all the more true for electricity distribution grids, where the increasing penetration of distributed renewable generation, local storage and electric vehicles will eventually change the way people approach their daily city lives: passive consumers will become active prosumers, who could directly influence network balancing and electricity trade. How far is this future? Innovative policies are needed to foster innovation while, at the same time, smart regulation will have to cope with the changing roles of DSOs and TSOs, in order to let all stakeholders benefit from this revolution.
