After the Carolina Panthers failed to trade for Deshaun Watson and Baker Mayfield they opted to trade up in the 2022 NFL Draft for Matt Corral, likely ending the team's pursuit of a veteran quarterback. Since Corral was selected in the third round, the Panthers, including head coach Matt Rhule and general manager Scott Fitterer, have maintained that they would like to bring Corral along slowly and that Darnold is the team's starter.
