President William Ruto has barred the issuing of permits to millers to import wheat or maize into the country. Ruto says the move is aimed at protecting local farmers. He said the government will only deviate from the directive if the local produce is insufficient. The president pointed out that the government will allocate U.S. $ 27 million to buy maize from farmers. He announced that National Cereals and Produce Board driers will be used to dry farmers' maize at a minimal fee of U.S.$0,34.
