Captain Scott Walker and I talk about some of the do's and don'ts of reef fishing while we can tuna in his kitchen. The Florida Keys have reefs 4 miles out, easily accessible. Because they are easily accessible you need to be courteous because there will be many boats out there trying to fish. Charter boats are out there trying to make a living and you are out there to make your friends and family happy. The biggest mistake I see is how much chum you bring when going fishing. Before you even set out make sure that you are taking enough chum. Chum and they will come. The commercial blocks of chum are very bulky, Scott uses 7-pound blocks and uses a dedicated cooler for chum and fills it up with as much as he can. Reefs support a lot of fish and chum holds them there - so when you pull up, if boats are already lined up, keep your distance (about 50-75 yards) and set your anchor out in front of your boat so when you come tight you will be stern to stern with the other boats.
