Raised in a Hebrew culture, David understood that Yahweh, the creator of the universe, had set His heart on an intimate relationship with His sons and daughters. David was a mystic who sought an unmediated encounter with the living God. God chose David because he was a man after His own heart. The Psalms are David’s personal journal of his journey with God through all the ups and downs of life. David learned how to be in ‘relational mode’ because God is always in ‘relational mode.’ David communed with God face-to-face. He encountered the glory realm of God and learned to abide in God’s hesed within the Tabernacle of David. He confronted his own propensity to slide out of relational mode, where he disengaged from the heart of God and his own heart.
