The Clare branch of Saint Vincent De Paul says its expecting to receive a large swathe of calls in the coming week after Christmas, as families try to tackle the rising cost of the holiday. Throughout 2024 to this point, Clare SVP has fielded 250,000 calls for assistance and expects a further 5,000 over the festive season to aid more than 1,500 households. On average, households are expected to spend €1,170 across the Christmas period, more than has been the case in previous years. Clare SVP Area President, Denis Carty, says what is a time of joy for most people can prove to be incredibly stressful for low income families.
