In "The Power of Beauty", Nancy Friday expounds her theory that there is a link between how we look and how we are perceived by others. She cites her own childhood, when, having a prettier sister and an attractive mothers, she often felt invisible. She recalls how in the 80s women were advised to subjugate their feminity when entering the workforce. She believes parents can help influence children's attitudes towards appearance.
