On April 24, 2018, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo, a former police officer in Auburn and Exeter, California. By using a combination of investigative techniques not available until 2004, the police confirmed DeAngelo's DNA was a match with a suspect in a decades-long pattern of crime in California.
