In 1984, 14-year-old Sandra Goler reported to her teacher that she was being sexually abused by her father. The result was an investigation by social workers and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police into the lives of her family in the South Mountain district of Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley. What they uncovered was a culture of abject poverty, neglect, ignorance, and, worst of all, sexual, physical and emotional abuse. It is the worst case of child abuse in Canadian history and it shocked the nation.
