Jeremy Helson: ‘Devastating losses’ as empty trawlers stuck in Lyttelton

At the end of this month, another four trawlers will join the three already stuck at Lyttelton Port without crew.Fishing companies have been in talks with Government officials since April saying unless they get specialist crew from overseas, the industry could die.The industry says it needs to bring in hundreds of Russian and Ukrainian crew members.Seafood New Zealand CEO Jeremy Helson told Newstalk ZB Christchurch there isn't enough isolation capacity to put through hundreds of crew members for 14 days.But he's offered a solution, saying the industry would happily foot the bill to establish more facilities, as it wouldn't outweigh the devastating losses they'll take if they don't do it.Listen above.
