In Part I, Heather Hitchcock, Chief Commercial Officer for Medical Informatics Corporation (MIC), describes the opportunities and challenges around harnessing data to improve healthcare. Rather than artificial intelligence (i.e. replacing human decision making with automation), Heather discusses the need for “augmented intelligence” where data is collected and analyzed to facilitate decision making in complex critical care environments. The challenge of collecting and aggregating data in real-time across many devices simultaneously generating data is complicated by sheer volume, time synchronization, and post processing, and made even more complex due to siloed data and proprietary technologies. Heather concludes by sharing MIC’s approach to this data problem.
