It was customary for servants to wash the feet of guests upon their arrival, before they sat down to eat. Jesus began doing the unthinkable – washing the feet of the disciples. While the disciples recognized what Jesus was doing, taking on the role of a servant, none of the disciples offered themselves for the task.
