The tragedy of the Morbi bridge collapse

On Sunday a British-era suspension bridge collapsed into Morbi city’s Machchu river resulting in the death of 135 people who were on the bridge at the time of its collapse. Oreva group, a clock-manufacturing company is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the bridge. It closed the bridge seven months ago for repair work and re-opened the bridge to the public on October 26. However, it was later revealed that the company didn’t get a fitness certificate from the Morbi municipality before re-opening. An FIR has been filed and nine people have been arrested until now. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was visiting the election-bound Gujarat, went to Morbi and declared swift and strong action against the concerned persons.
