This book is flat out, flat out! The tease goes like this... His dying father is in a hospital room hooked up to breathing apparatus making it difficult to communicate. He motioned the author Mike to come a little closer. He told Mike he was glad he was there and went on to tell his son, "YOU are a complete disappointment!" And he was just getting started.... This is a really raw, painful, intimate and ultimately joyful look at a very complex father/son relationship. But I think it could just as easily be a mother/son, daughter/father or mother/daughter relationship. It crosses all boundaries. I find it difficult to believe that this is as isolated as one might think. I believe people don't talk about it or are embarrassed to talk about it. How does one begin to process such a thought? A parent who is competitive and jealous of their own offspring.
