We've a bit of relationship advice in this week's podcast. If you want to show your nineties wife how much you love her, not faking your own suicide is a much better way of going about it than fixing a cupboard and preparing her a weird fish platter. It's advice that Gary doesn't want to listen to, though, and he's hell bent on setting up permanent residence in 1941, even though he hasn't done the necessary research of what that might entail. Spoiler alert: Lots and lots of George Formby, and a good deal more air raid related casualty than a Cricklewood native is generally used to. And no widgets.

"If the bog in the Indian doesn't have a window, you'll be bhaji-ed." Oh, Ron. Bhaji isn't a verb. But don't worry, Gary will still let you be his designated scapegoat for episode 4 of series 2. In this undeniably classic episode Gary's having two dates at the same time. Sure it's not the first time that ever happened in sit-com history, but let's not worry about that. Nor the fact that a disproportionate chunk of this week's podcast is devoted to Alpen, foreplay and the plight of Potato Pete, the wartime anti-squanderbug. More chicken tikka, Sanjay!

It's not clear whether it's a result of all that to-ing and fro-ing through the time tunnel, the stress of self-representation in a legal proceeding or just general duvet-induced trauma that's to blame, but Gary's feeling down in the dumps. All the neat whiskey and stealth counselling in the world won't help, but maybe a little bit of how's-your-father might do the trick? Three and a halfth time's the charm. After a longer than anticipated break, we're back to our fortnightly release schedule. McDonald's etiquette, spider mines and Chris's response to the death of Helen Baxendale are all subjects we end up talking about when we should be talking about episode 2 of series 2 of Goodnight Sweetheart. It's our favourite episode so far. Mostly because of Gary and Ron's man-date in a row-boat.

After a brief hiatus between series, the Goodnight Sweetcast is back for episode one of series two and Gary hasn't had sex in a fortnight. Maybe Ron can help out? Also: GNSH gets a bit meta and breaks the fourth wall, Gary is served a rather dubious looking whiskey, and Yvonne is unreasonable to an estate agent.

Gary's going to Runcorn to sell his plop (lie), going to America to record a musical (lie), and has nothing but good intentions about taking Phoebe for dinner at the Savoy (another lie). And as this is David Ryall's last appearance in the show, we take a look back at Eric's best bits. Oh, Dahd!

Illustrated pants, pea soup, hospital, pea soup, alcopops, Lithuania, dancing lessons and more bad parking. Gary has an "accident" and ends up in hospital in 1940. We're joined by guest Gill Sore for this episode, where Ron finally finds out the truth about Gary's time-travel secrets, but that's about all of the truth that's coming out of Mr Sparrow's mouth. Marvel at the power of the Chocolate Aero. Gasp at the parking prowess of the Rumbelows van. Gawp at the splendour of Yvonne's disco jumpsuit. What's more, we recite some submissions from the Garylery's Poetry Corner.

In the first episode to be recorded since the triumphant 2016 return of Goodnight Sweetheart as part of the BBC's Sitcom Season, we take a look at S01E03 - Is your journey really necessary? Gary struggles with phonebox technology on both sides of the portal, whisks Phoebe of to the West End for a ten-bob go in a bunkbed, talks himself out of a potential treason-hanging and convinces Yvonne he's out searching for his favourite circuit tester. We also learn about his romantic achilles heel - accordion music.

If you were worried that last week's sound quality was a bit ropey, please be assured that is fixed now, and we both sound lovely. Episode 2, in which Gary returns to 1940 out of spite, bribes Phoebe with some bananas, and gets punched on the nose. Ron's been at a painting class, but not for any reason we can glean significance from. We speculate that Gary's 90's ornaments might be mystical totems and renew the appeal for artwork to put in our Garylery, erotic or otherwise (preferably otherwise).

Series 1, episode 1 of Goodnight Sweetheart aired on November 18th 1993. Here we get to meet the characters we'll be sharing the next 58 episodes with - Gary Sparrow, Yvonne from the nineties, Phoebe from the forties, Ron the Enabler and police constables Deadman and Deadman. Listen in for our Joke of the Episode, hypothesising about Sparrow's hyperactive pheromone gland, as we try to get a handle on the most self-absorbed character in sitcom history.
