Aneesa was born and raised in Dallas, TX and initially got interested in urology after working as a research technician at UT Southwestern Medical Center in a kidney cancer lab. After receiving her PA degree, she joined an independent practice in Austin, where she spent 3 years doing general urology and assisting in the operating room. She has the opportunity to continue practicing urology, which she loves, at USMD. Back in 2016, Dr Altaf Saadi published a Huffington Post blog titled, "I Thought My Ivy League Degrees Would Protect Me From Bigotry. I Was Wrong." Dr. Saadi's article hit home with me as my wife is a nurse and I am, unfortunately, very familiar with hearing stories of patients making racist and Islamophobic remarks. Dr. Saadi joins me this episode to share her experiences as a Muslim in the healthcare field as well as tips for other professionals facing racism, bigotry in the work place. On Friday, August 16, 2013, Asmaa's husband Amr attended a peaceful protest in Egypt. An Egyptian army sniper shot and killed him, leaving a woman widowed and a child fatherless.
