She has worked in the area of primary prevention since 1982, first as the director of a child abuse prevention program for children, and for 20 years as the creator and developer of a nationally recognized, research-based, award-winning program teaching children and youth today the parenting skills they will need in the future. A nationally recognized expert on father-daughter relationships, Dr. Nielsen has been teaching, researching and writing about adolescents and father-daughter relationships since 1970. A member of Phi Beta Kappa and the recipient of the outstanding graduate's award in teacher education from the University of Tennessee in 1969, she taught high school for several years before earning a Master's Degree and a Doctorate in Educational Psychology and Counseling. As a professor of adolescent and educational psychology, she began teaching at Wake Forest University in 1974. Among her honors are: the Outstanding Article Award in 1980 from the U.S. Center for Women Scholars, a postdoctoral fellowship from the American Association of University Women, and an American Bar Association award for establishing an internship program to provide legal aid to victims of domestic violence. The Leander Independent School District / Austin Planetarium Event brought over 2700 WatchDOGS together under one roof. This was, without a doubt, the largest assembly of WatchDOGS in the history of the organization. On Saturday, WatchDOGS in Western Washington got together for the 5th Annual Watch D.O.G.S. Golf Tournament. We will be discussing these great events and how they will impact children at the local school level. She received her Master’s Degree from Ball State University in Indiana.
