Going without through Lent is overshadowed by the war in Ukraine. It makes me more aware of how fragile life can be. Humanity needs to do a better job in our contemporary world. And that’s why this Lenten pause allows us a time to reflect. St. Theodore of Tarsus, Archbishop of Canterbury and St. Egwin, Bishop of Worchester lived during the times when the Church in England was unified. The Virgin Mary appeared to St Egwin in Evesham. St Egwin then built the Evesham Abbey, the 3rd great monastery of England. Henry VIII had it destroyed in the 1600's. The surrounding neighborhoods used the stones from the ruins for other building projects. St. Mary Mazzarello and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, aka Salesian Sisters. St Mary Mazzarello had a vision of a big building filled with orphaned girls. She remembered this vision when St Bosco of the Salesians asked her to create the Daughters of Mary, Help of Christians to take care of abandoned young girls. While overseas last fall, I literally “stumbled” on the “Marian Column” in Old Town Prague. The story of the Marian Column of Prague is obscure. It had been hidden behind the Iron Curtain for too long. The original built in 1650 stood for 300 years before being destroyed in 1918.   There are links, photos and more about this on my website. In October 1859, the Virgin Mary appeared 3 times to Adele Brise near Green Bay, Wisconsin. Can you feel the gradual shift towards Christmas by the activities of people around you?
