Minns Government strengthens enforcement to tackle illegal tobacco
23/10/2024 Duração: 06minClinton discusses with Health Minister Ryan Park the NSW Government's reforms to tackle illegal tobacco, including tougher penalties, more enforcement officers, and a new licensing scheme for tobacco retailers. The rise in illicit tobacco sales, especially in rural areas, harms law-abiding businesses by undercutting prices, with some retailers near schools. The new scheme will require all tobacco and vaping retailers and wholesalers to obtain a licence, with penalties up to $220,000 for corporations and $44,000 for individuals selling without one. Support will be provided to help small businesses with the application process.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One in five children face chronic pain
23/10/2024 Duração: 06minRecent research reveals that 20.8% of children experience chronic pain at some point, affecting about five kids per classroom. This pain can cause them to miss 22% of school, leading to lost learning, isolation, and potential bullying. Chronic pain, lasting over three months, can continue into adulthood, often predicting work-loss. One challenge is the stigma, as pain is invisible. Teaching children new ways to think about pain can help them manage it and using age-appropriate language can improve communication about pain. For National Children’s Week (19th – 27th October), Clinton is joined by Dr Joshua Pate, a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at University of Technology Sydney with expertise in the complexity of pain and pain management. Dr Pate's research has received a global audience through his TED-Ed video 'The mysterious science of pain', and his children’s book series 'Zoe and Zak’s Pain Hacks'. Drug driving charges in NSW soar 836% amid expanded testing
22/10/2024 Duração: 06minA study by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) reveals a significant rise in drug driving charges in NSW, with cases increasing by 836% from 1,409 in 2014 to 13,815 in 2023. The surge is attributed to two factors: the expansion of the Mobile Drug Testing (MDT) program, increasing tests from 20,000 to 156,000 annually, and a rise in detection rates, especially among repeat offenders. However, there’s no evidence linking the trend to changes in drug use or behavior. Clinton speaks with BOCSAR's Jackie Fitzgerald, Executive Director, NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics & Research, who notes that while the program prioritises road safety, the number of tests remains low compared to registered drivers, limiting its deterrence.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
