    12/12/2024 Duração: 05min

With former Greens candidate Donna Nelson being sentenced to six years jail in Japan for importing 2kg of methamphetamine, the spotlight has turned to drug mules and romance scams. Over $201 million was reported as lost to romance scammers last year and that’s just the tip of the iceberg according to Dating Coach & Founder of Aligned Connections, Karina Chapman. Donna Nelson was duped by online romance scammer ‘Kelly’, by accepting a free holiday, and transporting a suitcase. Karina tells Clinton, “Scammers build relationships over time with vulnerable people before asking them to send money or carry a package. This can result in victims stuck in international prisons for years for something they didn’t intentionally do.”  Karina says five things you can do to keep yourself safe from international scammers are: Insist on a video chat. • Investigation reveals ‘Anonymous’ voting software flawed

    11/12/2024 Duração: 06min

Secret ballots are a cornerstone of democracy, ensuring elections remain free from coercion or retaliation by keeping voters' choices anonymous. Traditionally, physical paper ballots have safeguarded this anonymity. However, as voting moves online, questions about privacy arise. The Australian National University (ANU) recently held a critical vote on staff pay using an online system provided by CorpVote. While staff were assured of anonymity, concerns emerged. CorpVote claims its system guarantees secret ballots and is widely used by major Australian organizations, including Woolworths, Coles, Telstra, and the ABC. To investigate these assurances, Clinton speaks with Vanessa Teague, Adjunct Associate Professor, College of Engineering and Computer Science at ANU, who uncovered alarming issues regarding voter anonymity in the online system.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

  • Data shows NSW crime rate steady for the first time post-pandemic

    10/12/2024 Duração: 05min

The latest NSW crime statistics from BOCSAR show stability across all 13 major offence categories over the two years to September 2024—the first time since 2022 with no significant increases. Clinton speaks with Jackie Fitzgerald, BOCSAR's Executive Director, who notes the positive trend: “While property crime has been declining since 2018, we’ve seen persistent rises in domestic and sexual assault. It’s encouraging that as of September 2024, no major violent or property crimes have increased in the past two years, both in Sydney and regional NSW.” Motor vehicle theft, previously on the rise, also appears to have stabilized statewide. Only 5 of 28 NSW areas reported increases over the past two years. Additionally, court actions against adults and young people have remained steady. However, a 10-year view reveals notable increases in some offences: Domestic violence-related assault: Up 3% annually, rising in most regional and Sydney areas. Sexual assault: Up 8.2% annually, increa
