Whiskey And Mash

This week we take a break from our regular schedule to play our first of two rouds of MASHED, a Powered by the Apocalypse RPG. This week's episode includes character creation as well as a debilitating round of surgery, mainly focused around Laura's character, Cpt. George Baker.

This week we're covering three episodes from Season 8: ep 23, War Co-respondent; ep 24, Back Pay; ep 25, April Fools. In War Cor-respondent, we see BJ develop a crush that temps him as closely as he was in Season 5's episode "Hanky Panky." However, BJ keeps himself from losing his lifeline home to Peg and Millvalley. Hawk, for his part, keeps after the reporter Aggie O'Shea as much as she is hounding after BJ. Next, in episode 24 Hawkeye attempts to bill the Army for services rendered as a doctor is doing back in Minneapolis while Charles plays professor a gorup of three Korean doctors. In the end Hawkeye doesn't get his compensation and the Korean doctors do help Charles with his back problems. Finally, in April Fools, we watch as Col. Potter pulls the grand-daddy of April Fools pranks on his senior staff while they play at child versions amongst themselves.

This week on #WhiiskeyAndMASH we talk about how a 24 hour pass to Seoul can be less than fulfilling as well as how playing Bridge can lead to becoming a hand maid (Ses 9 Ep 1 - Best of Enemies) as well as how becoming a 4th grader's pen pall can dredge up all sorts of feelings of accomplishment, mirth, loss, and guilt (Ses 9 Ep 2 - Letters).

This week on #WhiskeyAndMASH we talk about another *crazy* scheme by Klinger to get home (which almost succeeds) in Ses 8 Ep 21, Good-bye Cruel World. Next, in Ses 8 Ep 22 Dreams we watch the innermost nightmares of the senior staff of the 4077th. Also, coming in the next couple of weeks we will be having a series of special episodes where we will be playing MASHED, a Powered by the Apocalypse RPG.

This week on #WhiskeyAndMASH we watch Ses 8 Ep 19 (Morale victory, http://mash.wikia.com/wiki/Morale_Victory_(TV_series_episode)) where Hawkeye and BJ deal with the near-riot they incited after watching a movie for the umpteenth time while Charles tries to reach a patient who sees his career as a concert pianist end because of an injury. Next, we discuss the Alda-filled episode Lend a Hand (Ses 8 Ep 20, http://mash.wikia.com/wiki/Lend_a_Hand_(TV_series_episode)) wherein Dr. Borelli, Alan Alda's father, and Medic Corporal Jarvis, Alan Alda's brother, make an appearance while the 4077th is slammed with a bought of boredom, relieved by a series of near-successful parties.

IN our first episode this week we see just what combat surgery can do to a brilliant surgeon as well as what being couped up together wiht the mumps can do to two brilliant surgeons (Ses 9 Ep 17 - Heal Thyself). Next we see, once again, what light children bring to the 4077th while ties from old friends bring an end to one chapter of Col. Potter's life (Ses 8 Ep 18 - Old Soldiers).

This week we talk about babies left on tent steps (the Swamp doesn't have a doorstep) and what they can expect as a Korean-American child (Ses 8 Ep 15 - Yessir, That's Our Baby) as well as what happens when one of the doctors decides to leave the bottle alone due to an outrageous bar tab while another decides to jump in based on a letter from his sister, Hanoria (Ses 8 Ep 16 - Bottle Fatigue).

This week we discuss the socio-political motivations that lead to a tussle in Post-Op between and Turk and Greek soldier as well as the intricacies of getting a phone line open from Korea to the Pentagon (Season 8 Ep 13 - Captains Outrageous) as well as what is all involved in getting an article written and published in the American College of Surgeons. Also, Jack Skuly makes his last appearance at the 4077th (Ses 8 Ep 14 - Stars and Stripes).

This week on the show we review Season 8 Episode 11, Life Time, and Season 8 Episode 12, Dear Uncle Abdul. In Life Time we watch as Hawkeye works feverishly from the chopper pad through the operating room to save a young man who has had a large portion of his aorta shot away. In doing so Hawkeye and BJ work together to keep from paralyzing the man while finding a sufficiently large graft to repair his heart. IN Episode 12, Dear Uncle Abdul, we see a lull in the action at the 4077th which invariablely means zany antics including Col. Potter using Klinger as a body double on Sophie, BJ and Hawkeyke having a running joke-off, Charles using Klinger as a bird dog, and Margaret seeking a replacement to her footlocker "that gave its life, that I might live."

This week we watch and review two very whitty episodes. First, in season 8 episode 9 (Mr. and Mrs. Who?) we see what happens when Charles goes on a bender in Tokyo as well as what the doctors finally do to try to treat hemmorraghic fever. Next, in season 8 episode 10 (The Yalu Brick Road) we watch as the 4077th goes down with salmonella poisoning from Thanksgiving Turkey. The Majors and Mulcahy try to keep the camp in clean sheets while the Captains make their way back to camp with their prisoner, Ralphie, who saves them from a North Korean patrol.

This week Chris and Gloria tackle episodes 7 and 8 out of season 8. First, in Nurse Doctor, they find out how a Catholic Priest works his way into a nurse's heart while the rest of the camp deals with a lack of water. Next, in Private Finance, they discuss the effects of Klinger nearly becoming a hairy shishkabob despite his best intentions while Hawkeye tries to navigate the truth while explaining to a soldier's parents how he made over $8000 as a corporal.

This week (Post-Radar, essentially) we review Ses 8 Ep 3 (Guerilla My Dreams) and Ses 8 Ep 6 (Period of Adjustment) where we see Kilinger out of a dress and in the role of the Company Clerk. In Guerilla My Dreams the Captains attempt to prevent a Korean Lt. Park from taking his prisoner away for certain torture and execution. Later (after our podcast-recording program randomly stops and forces us to frantically save the file, then restart), in Period of Adjustment, we watch the fallout from Klinger being constantly compared to and measured up against Radar as well as BJ's reaction to hearing that his daughter, Erin, called Radar "daddy."

In this episode we discuss Goodbye Rader, season 8 episodes 4 & 5. In this two-part episode of M*A*S*H we see Radar return from leave to find that the 4077th's generator has blown and that Klinger, who was filling in for him, was unable to get a replacement. Later, Radar finds out that his Uncle Ed has died, at which point Col. Potter gives him a hardship discharge. Reluctant to go home, Radar ultimately capitulates after Klinger finagles a generator. After saying goodbye to everyone as they're going into OR, Radar heads home, leaving his teddy bear behind on Hawkeye's bunk. Goodbye Radar, we'll miss you.

This week we tackle the last two episodes of Season 7: Episode 25 - Ain't Love Grand, and Episode 26 - The Party. In episode 25 we see Charles and Klinger form relationships we new female companions while the bromance between Hawkeye and BJ breaks down. By the end of th episode, though, everything is back to how it started (and Klinger and Charles drunkenly sing "Stormy Weather" together). In Episode 26 BJ plans a big reunion party for all the families of the 4077 staff at The Pierre in New York. Afterward, they all get letters telling how great the event was.

In our second episode of 2017 we take on Season 8 Episode 1 - Too Many Cooks and Episode 2 - Are you now, Margaret? In "Too Many Cooks" we watch what lengths the Doctors and Margaret at the 4077th will go to in order to get a soldier reassigned as a cook, as well as to help Col. Potter out of his most current marital-related funk. In "Are you now, Margaret?" we see perhaps a portion of what it would have been like to live through the McCarthyism, Red Scare ear of American History where everyone was suspect as a Communist Sympathizer.

This week we're back to our normal two episodes which include Ses 7 Eps 23 (Preventative Medicine) and 24 (A Night At Rosie's). In our first episode, we see what lengths Hawkeye will go to in order to prevent further casualties (hint: it involves surgery) and what Klinger's latest "get of of the Army" scam involves. In the second we see what happens when the people at the 4077th, especially Hawkeye, need a pressure release from the war.

This week we do an extended podcast (3 episodes). In the first, we see what happens after Margaret gets her final divorce decree as well as what Radar attempts to catch the eye of a new nurse (Ses 7 Ep 20 - Hot Lips is Back in Town). In the second, the 4077th is being shelled. To avoid being hit, Potter orders the camp to move its operations (not a bug-out though) to a nearby cave. We find out that Hawkeye suffers from claustrophobia and that Margaret is afraid of loud noises, such as the sound of shells exploding (Ses 7 Ep 21 - C*A*V*E). Lastly, we see the last appearance in the series of Col. Flagg as he investigates Hawkeye as a Pinko Commie lover. Specifically, Hawkeye took a North Korean soldier before an American soldier. The American soldier's buddy comes to the Swamp to express his displeasure with Hawkeye's choice (Ses 7 Ep 22 - Rally 'Round the Flagg, Boys).

This week we see just what price people pay for being in the army, avoiding the army, and trying to get out of the army (Ses 7 Ep 18 - The Price) as well as what happens when a very young, very talented surgeon shows up to the 4077th and starts showing up all the surgeons (Ses 7 Ep 19 - The Young and the Restless).

This week on Whiskey and MASH, Gloria and Chris discuss how BJ tries (but fails) to save the world (Ses 7 Ep 16 - B.J. Papa San) as well as how Hawkeye has to learn how to follow rather than lead in a relationship with a Sweedish Doctor, Inga Halvorsen (Ses 7 Ep 17 - Inga).

This week, we see how frustrated Fr. Mulcahy can get before he snaps and hits a patient (Ses 7 Ep 14 - An Eye for a Tooth) as well as how ineffective Fr. Mulcahy can feel at times, despite his large impact on the moral of the camp (Ses 7 Ep 15 - Dear Sis).
