Sinopse

Flix and a Six is podcast about movies and beer. Anthony and Al are cousins that love to grab a couple drinks and discuss films. They thought it would be fun to share it with you. This is the first podcast in a series of creative entertainment outlets produced by The Spinchoon.

Episódios

  • Episode 13: We Wonder what Saison it is

    05/06/2017 Duração: 01h31min

Man I wish we had a better title for our glorious return. Our newest episode, after the briefest of hiatuses (hiatii? whichever it is), is on Wonder Woman, the first good DCEU movie. So now we have a reason to still have hope and keep watching their movies. It’s pretty damn good. So was our beer of the week: Dogfish Head Biere de Provence Saison. Our return saw some solid beer talk as well, as Anthony learning about herbs in beer. So grab a drink and give this a listen; Flix & a Six is back and better than ever, only on The Spinchoon!

  • Episode 12: We Guard the Galaxy Robustly

    22/05/2017 Duração: 01h23min

James Gunn strikes again. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is our topic, and it’s a good one. All the characters we love, plus a couple new ones, and an expansion of the wacky cosmic side of the MCU. Plus laughs. So many laughs (not to mention feels). The guys get into what makes this movie tick, as well as where it sits in the rapidly expanding Marvel pantheon. And they wash it all down with an Assawoman Transporter Robust Porter. A new Flix & a Six, coming at you, only on The Spinchoon!

  • Episode 11: We Clown around in the Furious Universe

    15/05/2017 Duração: 53min

Fate of the Furious. F8 of the Furious? Serious missed marketing opportunity here folks. The guys watched Fate of the Furiosa (get it? seriously we can go all day with these) because why not. And it turned out to be a pretty fun ride (having expectations as low as Al did going in helps). What made it more fun was drinking Assawoman (get your minds out of the gutter) Angry Clown Brown Ale while discussing it. So kick back, relax, and enjoy the newest episode of Flix & a Six, only on the Spinchoon!

  • Episode 10: May the Fourth be with you! (An Anniversary Episode)

    08/05/2017 Duração: 01h13min

That’s right it’s the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. So because we love the Star Wars Saga so much, and because Star Wars day was this past weekend (and no other reasons, definitely not anything schedule related or because we couldn’t see all the movies we had planned to see. Trust us), we decided to spend some time discussing one of our favorite movies (although as Anthony alleged this one is no one’s favorite Star Wars). And we talked about some stuff in the rest of the Star Wars universe as well because we wanted to. It’s our show we’ll do what we want and you’ll like it. This discussion was made possible by the most fitting beer companion: Newburgh Brewing 5th Anniversary Ale. It’s an Imperial Cream Ale, so between references to empires and anniversaries, this beer was a no brainer. Plus when have you known us to turn down a new offering from Newburgh? Please enjoy our celebration of these important dates in history, here on Flix & a Six, only on The Spinchoon!

  • Episode 9: We set sail ‘round the world wondering Why Him?

    01/05/2017 Duração: 01h09min

We debut a couple new aspects in the Flix & a Six universe in this episode: a full-on comedy movie topic and a live audience. The movie this week is Why Him?, featuring the odd pairing of Bryan Cranston and James Franco. Not exactly Abort and Costello in the pantheon of comedy duos, but damnit if they didn’t catch lightning in a bottle on this one. The two of them are the core of this comedy’s success, even if it’s the scene stealing Keegan-Michael Key who has the highest comedic highs. So in case you couldn’t put all that together: this movie is damn funny. As was our awkward inclusion of Al’s brother Dominick (well maybe not damn funny but it had it’s moments) as the aforementioned live audience; our very own peanut gallery. He also supplied us with our beer this week, Grey Sail Brewing Flagship Ale, a cream ale from Rhode Island. So many thanks to Dominick for his contributions this week. So come join us in a hearty laugh alongside Why Him? In the newest Flix & a Six, only on the Spinchoon!

  • Episode 8: We face our fears with Stout hearts, and hunt down the Ghost within

    23/04/2017 Duração: 01h06min

We tread a little new ground here, as our choice of the new release Ghost in the Shell marks the first movie we weren’t fully simpatico in our desire to go see. Since Al was cautiously interested, but Anthony was much less so, it made for a different viewing and discussion experience. We open up the movie talk with a fun little tangent on the recent trends in movie trailers (it’s relevant, Ghost in the Shell followed the trend) before we get to the heart of the matter. Our discussion covered a wide range of topics, including the effects of expectation on our perception of a movie we were unsure on. We dabbled in some more world building talk (it’s no John Wick as Anthony would say), as well as the cinematography and visual aesthetic that makes this movie somewhat unique in the current movie landscape. Plus don’t get us started (this was probably our favorite part) on the cast, which is really where this movie was at its strongest. From the stars we know (Michael Pitt sighting!), to the relative unknowns (seri

  • Episode 7: We Arrive a Stone’s throw from our destination

    17/04/2017 Duração: 01h03min

We apologize, this isn’t the strongest title, but we’re sticking to our conventions, title quality be damned! Don’t let the title fool you though, because Arrival was a damn good movie, and we like to think we did a pretty damn good job talking about it (I know, little biased here, but it happens). If you haven’t seen this yet, go fix that quick because we really liked it, and then come back and listen. We (and, you know, the movie we’re talking about) give some thought to the important themes in the movie, such as the nature of time and communication, as well as the power and pitfalls of nonlinear story telling in movies. And if you’re worried that a movie about how we communicate might be boring, just remember this movie is about aliens. It’s definitely not boring, we talk all about Abort and Costello. For you beer fans (we’ll never forget about you) we try out Stone Stochasticity Grainiac. Weird name for a really good beer. All of this, and more, on the newest episode of Flix & a Six, only on the Spinchoon

  • Episode 6: We look at the landscape of the Legendary MonsterVerse while sampling Sur Lie Sour Ale

    10/04/2017 Duração: 01h36min

Our newest episode sees us discuss the Legendary MonsterVerse (that’s the Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla and Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island for you fans keeping score at home). We do a deep dive on both movies individually (Al was maybe, possibly faking his way through the Godzilla portion….. ok he was faking it, he saw a total of 8 mins of the movie). No faking it when it comes to Kong, though, as both of us really enjoyed it and get into the nitty gritty details of why it really works, especially over a recent miss like the Peter Jackson King Kong. All of this comes to you on the back of our enjoyment of Newburgh (yep we have another new Newburgh beer) Sur Lie Sour Ale. So buckle up, and listen to our latest episode of Flix & a Six, only on the Spinchoon!

  • Episode 5: We tackle the Sixpoints (or however many) of the Superhero movie industry

    03/04/2017 Duração: 01h38min

This week we did something a little different than our previous episodes. Instead of discussing a specific new movie (and/or its predecessor) we take a deep dive into the current, and future, landscape of the Superhero movie industry. Specifically, we spent most of our time on the MCU and DCEU. And it’s not like we’re the first people to trash the DCEU, but we like to think that we did it the best (who’s counting really?). Our anger at the DCEU, and our love for the MCU (look the acronyms up if you need to, I’m too lazy to type the words 8 times each), was fueled by the liquid stylings of Sixpoint Tesla and Jammer. That’s right we broke all types of Flix & a Six ground. Multiple beers for multiple movies. True innovators. We’ll be expecting our Edison Awards in the mail. We hope you enjoy a very special episode of Flix & a Six, only on The Spinchoon!

  • Episode IV: We master build a consensus on Lego Batman, while taking flight on Falcon(er) wings

    27/03/2017 Duração: 53min

It is a period of civil war. rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. Ok sure that was a bad joke (we’re playing to the cheap seats here) but shit, if you haven’t realized by now that we are gigantically obsessed with all things Star Wars, I’m not sure even beating you over the head with the opening crawl will do it. Basically, if you hear “Episode 4”, and you don’t immediately think Star Wars, it’s probably not going to work out between us. It’s definitely you, and not us. Back on track, we talk about Lego Batman, and the Lego movie “series” in general, in this episode. Not just the Lego aspect either, as we also consider where it ranks among Batman movies period (spoiler alert, it’s better than most of the Batman movies). We also enjoy a Falconer’s Flight Extra IPA (brewed by resident homebrew enthusiast, Al) and give you our take on how that came out. We hope you enjoy the latest from the guys on Flix & a Six, only on the Spinchoon!

  • Episode 3: We kill an absurd amount of….. time talking about the Heady John Wick saga

    20/03/2017 Duração: 57min

Actually, this is one of our shorter episodes (it’s still like an hour…. We like to talk). But instead of just a straight review of John Wick: Chapter 2, we spend the first half of the episode talking about the continuing expansion of the Wickiverse (yes I just made that up while typing, and don’t come at me if it exists somewhere on the internet, because I’m too lazy to check if someone already thought of this) and how they accomplish ridiculously good world building with minimal plot and exposition. Also, you know, bad ass fight choreography and stuff (that’s the technical term. Look it up). Of course, we do a spoiler heavy conversation in the second half of the episode (that’s what the 7 of you still with us are looking for right?). We also drink, enjoy, and rave about Heady Topper, from The Alchemist. For those of you who have heard of, but never had, Heady Topper, yea it’s good (seriously Josh we are in your debt for getting that for us). Come check out our thoughts on the B movie Keanu Reeves vehicle, t

  • Episode 2: We take a road trip with Weapon X and Sir Charles, and pick up Jessica in Newburgh

    13/03/2017 Duração: 01h27min

Now that the 3-part saga that was our debut has concluded, it’s time to move on to Logan. And because we are the professionals you’ve come to expect (Ha!), we even figured out how to do a proper spoiler warning (not proud that it took this long. We’re sorry). In all seriousness, we spend the first half of the episode talking completely (mostly) spoiler free to give you a feel for how much we enjoyed the movie if you haven’t seen it yet. It’s ridiculously good. The first half also includes our sampling and review of Newburgh Brewing Company’s (still not sponsored. Who knew business was so difficult?) Jessica, a sour cherry porter. The second half of the episode is our deep dive into what made Logan the best X-Men movie to date, as well as a possible occurrence of Al crying at a movie (all 4 of you that have been with us this far will get this, the rest of you…. O well and also don’t judge us). So buckle up, and listen up, as we take you on this emotional roller coaster on Flix & a Six, only on the Spinchoon!

  • Episode 1 — Part 3: We travel to a galaxy far, far away and spice up your holiday

    06/03/2017 Duração: 01h08min

Just in case you were worried that we were always in lockstep, you can listen to us argue over what worked and what didn’t in Rogue One. Because Al thought the movie was great and Anthony thought it was good and everyone knows that’s as far apart on the spectrum as you can be….. Seriously we got pretty good mileage out of that since this is a story about characters and Anthony didn’t really like them. We also debuted a segment that we think will be a lot of fun for the pod, WILD SPECULATION™!, where we get into some theories on the recently announced title of Episode 8: The Last Jedi. All of this under the influence (just make sure you stick with us past the intro and the beer, I promise we get on topic with the movie) of the Holiday Spiced Ale from Al’s Ales (We’re actually endorsed by this one! I wonder how we pulled that one off…..). Stay tuned for the stunning conclusion (finally) of the first episode (seriously we’re doing our best) of Flix & a Six, only on The Spinchoon!

  • Episode 1 - Part 2: We get lost in La La Land after a Copperhead bite

    27/02/2017 Duração: 01h12min

Well, at least this was closer to the idea we had trying to talk Oscars, as we fall down the rabbit hole that is La La Land. Naturally, that means we went off on a big ol’ tangent as Al hijacked the pod to talk about Cloud Atlas (get used to this it’s gonna happen a lot) and Mr. Nobody. Anthony was kind enough to indulge him. We reviewed Fordham Copperhead Ale (this endorsement is way less likely to happen) and we even made a (pathetic) effort to talk about the Oscar field as a whole, even though we only saw 2 of the movies that had significant nominations (sorry….. actually this is our pod we’ll do what we want). And yea it’s gonna be our second podcast, even though it’s the middle third of the first one…. So part 2. We’ll figure it out eventually I promise (I think). If you’re still with us after the first, congrats you’re a trooper, so enjoy the next iteration of Flix & a Six on The Spinchoon!

  • Episode 1 - Part 1: We climb Hacksaw Ridge with a Gigaboss in tow

    20/02/2017 Duração: 56min

In our inaugural episode we discussed the merits of Hacksaw Ridge in gory detail (pun intended). Of course it was supposed to be a one(ish) hour debut about beer, the Oscars, and Star Wars….but over 4 hours of content later you are graced with nearly one full hour of awkward introductions to our podcast, our highly sophisticated (Ha!) opinions on Newburgh Brewing Gigaboss Double IPA (still working on that endorsement), and deep, thoughtful discussion on Hacksaw Ridge. Listen up because you can only find this train wreck here on Flix & a Six, the flagship podcast of The Spinchoon!
