Sinopse

Here on the Large Marge Sent Us podcast, Sweety and Sweetie are our names and nostalgia is our game! Once a week (or more if you're lucky!) we watch movies from the 80s and 90s that shaped our childhoods and then have a sisterly chat about them. We usually sing songs and there's about a 100% chance we'll crack up with bouts of laughter. We hope you will too! So come join us and step back into a time when life was good and the movies were even better Logo created lovingly by Frankie Donlon.Follow us on Twitter @TheSweetieClub and on Facebook!

  • Episode 106: Cool Runnings

    10/02/2018 Duração: 55min

Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up ..... It's Bobsled Time! Coooooooool Runnings!  Happy Winter Olympics everyone! We celebrated by watching this epic underdog film from 1993.  Based on true events - there was a real Jamaican bobsled team that slid their way to the Calgary Olympics in 1988. Starring John Candy and some no name but incredibly charismatic faux Jamaicans actors, this movie taught us that it's not always about winning and that even if you've never seen snow or ice or even a bobsled before, that shouldn't stop you from achieving your Winter Olympic dreams! We'll chat about all the scary sled events at the Winter Olympics, induct Junior into the Sweetie Club, and try to come to a consensus of why white dudes were running around in the mid 90s with Rastafarian caps with fake dreads!  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 105: The Next Karate Kid

    05/02/2018 Duração: 01h02min

So.....we didn't watch the Super Bowl (again!) but still ate nachos and watched a sport's adjacent film, none other than The Next Karate Kid! Starring a baby Hilary Swank and our absolute favorite Pat Morita, The Next Karate Kid is the fourth installment of the KK franchise, but this time it's with a girl! Imagine that! Julie's got a bad attitude (I mean her parents died recently and she's forced to move towns - I feel you girl) and when her grandfather's old army buddy comes to town, her grandmother decides it's a perfect time for a house swap aka time for Mr. Miyagi to guide another troubled kid back to safety by way of karate.  Julie fights against the evil Alpha Elite aka Raper Club, finds a sorta boyfriend in sweet guy Eric, and makes some fun new monk friends. Really best movie ever! We'll chat about lots of fun 90s thangs (short prom dresses, belly shirts, thick rolled ankle socks, and the Cranberries), Sweetie confesses she wishes there was more karate, and we choose our favorite monk!  Theme song per

Huge shoutout and thank you to Stephen Thompson from Pop Culture Happy Hour and NPR Music for submitting his own list---we are honored!!!

  • Episode 104: Steel Magnolias

    01/02/2018 Duração: 53min

Who's ready for Sobfest 2K18? Get the tissues guys, we're watching Steel Magnolias! Steel Mag's was one of three movies that the Sweeties grew up crying all over - who can forget the sad as fuck story about sweet Shelby, a Louisiana Southern belle stricken with Type 1 diabetes but wants a baby so badly, so risks her life to have one - much to the chagrin of her very overbearing mother M'Lynn. This movie is about the friendships that keep us afloat, when life and type 1 diabetes gets us down.  With an all star cast, GIANT big puffy hairstyles, and a lot of useless men that don't really do much, we love this film and laughed and cried and cried some more.    Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 103: Empire Records

    26/01/2018 Duração: 01h10min

Happy Friday guys! Your 90s cult classic has arrived! Empire Records was a BIG movie for anyone who was a kid in the 1990s. Who didn't wanted to work at a cool indie record store and be friends with the likes of Gina, Lucas, Corey, AJ, Berko, Deb, Mark, Eddie, and even spastic Warren? This movie is like a hot water bottle sent straight from 1995, that makes us so nostalgic for plaid mini skirts, men with semi long hair (mobs?), condom caps, and Gameboys.  Join us as we chat about how every girl wanted to be Rene Zellweger singin' Sugar High, what boy from The Empire Records staff we would want to date today, and we make some wild predictions on what all the characters would be doing in 2018. Hot take. Mark may be dead.

  • Episode 102: Splash

    19/01/2018 Duração: 01h04min

Continuing this new fun trend we have of watching 80s and 90s films loosely related to current Oscar frontrunners (see our episode about The Cutting Edge and I, Tonya) tonight we watched everyone's favorite fish out of water film, Splash, as we found it has a near identical plot to The Shape of Water! Directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, Splash is a rom com with a fishy twist.  Mermaid saves man, then man saves mermaid, but not before she steals his heart! We drank too many margaritas so had a sugar high and giggled a lot but come along and listen to us stumble through this crazy ass plot, talk about our fondness for mermaids and mermaid lore, crack up over the plot to the TV movie sequel Splash Too, and how we were really disappointed with Tom Hank's character for 10 minutes in this movie and that was enough to ruin our lives.     Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 101: The Parent Trap

    14/01/2018 Duração: 01h06min

Our week long celebration of our 100th episode continues and we're going way, way back to when Hayley Mills ruled the day! The Parent Trap from 1961 gave a lot of kids of divorced parents false hope as two separated at near birth twin sisters Susan and Sharon meet at a summer camp and concoct a plan to get their parents Mitch and Maggie back together despite being a horrible couple who fights a lot and probably have nothing in common! We LOVED Hayley Mills as a kid and enjoyed chatting about all the twins in our lives, whether we would want to live with mom in Boston (HELL YES) or with dad in California (hmm after this winter maybe) and Sweety spills the unfortunate beans that she kind of maybe likes the remake with Lindsay Lohan better! Blasphemy says Sweetie! We dedicate this episode to our first fan Jen as she just had twin babies of her own in December! Thank you Jen for being our first fan that made us realize that more people were listening to us other than our mother!      Theme song performed by Deidr

  • Episode 100: The Return of the Jedi

    12/01/2018 Duração: 01h10min

YOU GUYS IT'S OUR 100th EPISODE!!!! We're celebrating by watching The Return of the Jedi and basking in the cuteness of Ewoks. We don't care if you hate them, we just want to know where we can get one. Join us as we talk about why this was our favorite Star Wars movie as kids, why Obi "Don't Call me Ben" Kenobi is a shifty liar, and review the abomination that is Hayden Christensen and why he wasn't content with just ruining 3 Star Wars movies. Fun fact: Apparently when you turn into a weird egg-head Evil Sith lord, you can decide if you want to look like your young boyish self or an old person. Who knew!?  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon. Follow us on Twitter @TheSweetieClub and on Instagram @LargeMargeSentUs.

  • Episode 99: The Cutting Edge

    08/01/2018 Duração: 01h07min

Toe pick! We love figure skating more than just about everything else in the world, so it was clear to us that in order to celebrate the release of I, Tonya---we had to watch the Cutting Edge! Warning: This podcast contains a lot of chatter, tears, and good memories as we dive into the golden age of figure skating...so make sure your laces are tight.    Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 98: The Net

    02/01/2018 Duração: 01h01min

In 1995, a little movie came out that was a cautionary tale about the dangers of the internet, identity theft, and why you should never ever drink a Gibson martini with a handsome British man in Cancun who claims his favorite movie is Breakfast at Tiffany's. The Net, despite its horrible title (yo, no one calls it the "net" anymore, if we ever did) is a GREAT film.  We used to watch this on good old HBO and instantly wanted to be coders and couldn't wait for the days when we could order our pizza online!  Join us as we discuss how much we miss floppy disks, how Sandra Bullock's Angela Bennett is one bad ass bitch slash smart cookie, and how Dennis Miller was a rando choice for a self centered ex boyfriend character with an unfortunate penicillin allergy.  Happy New Year!     Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 97: Scrooged

    20/12/2017 Duração: 51min

Happy Christmas from the Sweeties! We're off to Ireland, but we'll leave you with an episode dedicated to one of our favorite family Christmas movies---Scrooged! Released in 1988, Scrooged retells A Christmas Carol with a heavy amount of Bill Murray. We loved this as kids even though it kind of scared the crap out of us. Join us for a rousing discussion about: why Carol Kane's slap happy attitude made Sweetie upset, how we might be rethinking that whole cremation thing and why "Lumpy" is not our favorite term of endearment.   Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 96: The Exorcist

    15/12/2017 Duração: 58min

Don't lie to us. We know The Exorcist is your favorite closet Xmas movie and that's why we thought it would be the perfect break in a slew of holiday themed films this month. Anti Christ for Christmas? What what. The Sweeties got into this movie because Sweetie watched it for her birthday sleepover from the ages of 12 to 18, while lil Sweety hid behind the couch. Known as one of the scariest movies on the planet, The Exorcist is all about demonic possession, pea soup vomit, really unfortunate uses of the c-word andddddd some pretty great 70s outfits.  We get real deep with this one so hold onto your crucifixes and holy water and let the power of Christ compel you!!  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 95: Santa Claus the Movie

    11/12/2017 Duração: 38min

Since we're not the biggest Christmas lovers, we decided to let the fans decide which Christmas movie we should cover. We listened to your recommendations, put them all in a cute stocking and picked one out to watch. The winner was....Santa Claus the Movie! Released in 1985 and starring Dudley Moore and John Lithgow, Santa Claus the movie is part Santa origin story part Christmas epic saga, and believe it or not we had never seen it (or remembered it). Join us as we experience a full dose of Christmas, and hear what troubles us the most about this flick (hint it rhymes with Lon Mithgow's beef). Thanks to @Megs_C  @mitzy247 and @CAlice13 for the recommendation! This episode is brought to you by Sudio. • Episode 94: The Mighty Ducks

    06/12/2017 Duração: 01h08min

Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Guys, we watched The Mighty Ducks and we're here to say, it holds up! From 1992, who can forget when Gordon Bombay got a pesky DUI and as punishment was forced to coach a pee-wee hockey team and look deep inside himself on why he was a miserable bastard.  This movie falls into the genre of a rag-tag under team beating all odds to win it all! Tune in as we discuss the lackluster acting skills of Emilio Estevez, why we're still in love with Joshua Jackson after all these years, and why did people wear all sort of inappropriate hats in the 1990s.  Bonus Sweetie knocks down the mic. Twice. Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon.  Follow us on Twitter @TheSweetieClub and on Instagram @LargeMargeSentUs

  • Episode 93: The Bodyguard

    01/12/2017 Duração: 51min

We're capping off our month of random selections with 1992's The Bodyguard! A movie where the soundtrack might just be better than the film (sorry) but we love it anyways I guess. Starring Whitney Houston in her very first movie role as Rachel Marron (worst pop star name I ever heard) and hot in the 90s, Kevin Costner. Join us as we talk about hard hitting topics like: Lollipops---not professional. Orange Juice---a terrible beverage and most importantly how badly can we  butcher a Whitney Houston song? Listen to find out!  **Warning turn down your volume early on when Sweetie goes to town in the Sweetie Synopsis intro**   Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon. • Episode 92: The Money Pit

    28/11/2017 Duração: 01h19min

The house is going to be great! Famous last words in this hilarious comedy from 1986, which was a very good year indeed because our sweet Sweety was born! We loved this film as kids, and heck we don't even know why because what did we know about home repair? But now that we're seasoned HGTV watchers, we totally get the plight of Walter and Ana, as they deal with the never ending nightmare of a reno project but also how this tests their fragile relationship that was unknowingly filled with massive trust issues! Wow, this is heavy.  Listen in as we chat about all the secondary characters we loved, sing multiple rounds of the "The Name Game" Song (Anna Banna Bobanna etc), and wax on endlessly about the comedic brilliance of the one, the only Tom Hanks!  This episode is brought to you by Sudio. • Episode 91: That Thing You Do!

    16/11/2017 Duração: 01h17min

As two Sweeties who were in the prime of the Boy Band resurgence in the 90s, we fully support and LOVE That Thing You Do! with every fiber of our being. Written and directed by Tom Hanks (Sweetie Club member and alumni), That Thing You Do! tells the tale of The Wonders' quick rise to fame in 1964. Join us as we discuss why Jimmy is probably most definitely a serial killer, our own experiences with boy band mania, and hear Sweety sing all the songs from the soundtrack.  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 90: Babe

    13/11/2017 Duração: 01h13min

Straight talk you guys. If you don't find Babe to be the cutest movie that ever existed....you might be a terrorist. Just sayin. Join us as we relive this cute AF movie and talk all about how it warmed our hearts and souls. We'll get angered by its Oscar snub, reenact our favorite Gay Cow moments, and wonder if Babe 2 Pig in the City is worth watching. We'll also continue to be confused at why we thought this movie was supposed to take place in the UK and pour one out for Christine Cavanaugh who sadly passed away in 2014. That'll do pig. That'll do. Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon. Follow us on Twitter @TheSweetieClub and on Instagram @LargeMargeSentUs

  • Episode 89: Jumanji

    08/11/2017 Duração: 01h11min

Do you hear that drumming? It's a new episode all about your favorite book about a game turned movie, turned game----JUMANJI!!! Released in 1995 and starring the always endearing Robin Williams, Jumanji taught us that board games can sometimes be dangerous and that comedically placed Monkeys won't save bad CGI no matter how wily you make them. Join us as we discuss which game obstacle was our favorite, why they chose to make the same actor play the mean scary hunter and Alan's dad, and hear us mix up the name Alan and Peter the entire time!  This episode is brought to you by Sudio. • Episode 88: Annie

    03/11/2017 Duração: 01h22min

Great day! Great day! WE DID ANOTHER MUSICAL! Sweetie's third favorite musical is ANNIE, and oh boy was she excited today! From 1982, Annie is the lovable story about an orphan with a heart of gold and literally a gold heart locket, who warms the heart of the Depression era, Republican, money loving Daddy Warbucks! The songs are famous! The red headed wig is famous! What's not to love?  Tune in as we warble through all 13 musical numbers, discuss the idea of Miss Hannigan as a sympathetic villain, whether Daddy Warbucks and Grace's relationship was really workplace appropriate, and dissect the really unfortunate racial stereotypes that seem to plague all our beloved 80s films. Womp, womp. Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Don't wait to listen to this podcast until tomorrow! It's only a download awayyyyyyy. Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen.
