The San Diego Gulls hit home ice for the third time this week Saturday night, this time to take on Pacific Division rival Stockton Heat, in a pivotal AHL playoff race match-up. Entering the game, the Gulls sat in 3rd place with 73 points (tied with Colorado), two points behind San Jose and 10 points behind Bakersfield. The Gulls needed a win tonight to keep up with the tight playoff race! Despite many scoring chances in the first period, the Gulls and Heat found themselves locked in a scoreless tie after 20 minutes of play. With the Gulls holding the second spot in the Pacific Division by only a point, Saturday's game proved to be a pivotal game toward San Diego's playoff push. After falling behind 1-0 within the first two minutes of the game, the Gulls stormed back for a strong second half of the first period, and tallied four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead heading into the first intermission. With the Gulls dominating the first period, San Diego looked to keep the pressure on Ontario in the later moments of the game. However, Ontario stormed back in the middle frame, and scored 3 unanswered goals to cut the deficit to one with 20 minutes still to play.
