Sinopse

This novel, the most importante in English literature history, was rejected by a London publisher and then published in anonymous form only in 1813. Jane Austen started to write it when she was twenty-one. It tells about the story of five sisters from the Bennet family, following the sentimental adventures among the girls and their suitors. The Bennet family live in a peaceful british province with limited means: the five sisters are in the right age to find husband and the arrival in the country of two fascinating and wealthy bachelors is an event destined to change their monotonous routine. In the book stands up the figure of Elizabeth who, with great intelligence and sense of humour, refuses the idea to spending her life between dances, receptions and afternoon tea. Her relationship with one of the two newcomers, the aloof and mysterious Mr. Darcy, is initially wrapped in a cordial dislike, wich gradually turns into big love. Comedy of manners among the most studied and loved in English literature, Austen masterfully portraits the characters and the provincial life in which herself was really poured in: differences in social class, prejudices of her fellow citizens and neighbors, the pride and obstinacy of the strongest characters. An unforgettable masterpiece of an authress who, with relentless and sometimes cynical eyes, sketches a perfect satire of vanity, weaknesses and virtues of domestic life.
