Jesus cautions and reminds us that it’s easy to do the right and good things for all the wrong reasons. There is a propensity in all of us to do the right things for all the wrong reasons. This is especially true in the church. This isn’t just at the giving level – in chapter 6 Jesus identifies 3 important practices he assumes we’ll do: give to the poor, pray, and fast. In short Jesus is teaching us how to not be religious

Redemption City Church is built around the idea of practicing the way of Jesus, together, for the renewal of the city. We believe that to be an apprentice of Jesus is to order your life around three goals: be with Jesus, become like Jesus, and do what Jesus did. Our dream is that as we live this way, our lives, our communities, and our city, will be transformed.  Our prayer is as Jesus prayed, that God’s will would be done in Boston as it is in Heaven.

We don’t know how much longer this pandemic, and the accompanying social unrest, will last. We were all hoping that by the beginning of 2021 life would start to return to normal. That, clearly, has yet to happen. So, here’s the question: How do we not just survive the coming season – but rather come out the other side of it with a new inner strength and fortitude, and above all, spiritual formation in the the person of Jesus? Is there a way to travel this road of pain together with joy? Join us as we pause to reflect this past year and begin looking forward with joy.

In Jesus’ time, making promises one could not keep was prevalent. Lack of integrity was seen as something acceptable and Jesus says lack of integrity has no place among God’s people. Jesus taught that if you say you are going to do something, do it and if you can’t say no. Live with integrity. Thats it. Simple, profound, but so challenging.

Attitudes about marriage in culture have been shifting in a downward trend and is disappearing fast. There are many reasons for this. One reason among many why people choose not to get married is divorce. Many come from divorced backgrounds. Others have parents in a bad marriage and many don’t want that life. Whatever the reasons are for not getting are not always for godly reasons but broken ones. What does all this mean for followers of Jesus? How do we interact with the realities of marriage in a broken and fallen world? How can we commend commitment in an age of divorce?

We live in a sex driven society. The church has responded to it in one of two ways: condemnation or accommodation. The problem with condemning or accommodating views regarding sex culture is that it assumes we are passive victims of desire, and in both views it places all blame for our struggle “out there” in the culture. Jesus’ words on from the sermon on the mount offers us a more nuanced view. All the warnings in the Bible about sex are designed around the idea that sex is good and the warnings are there to protect something that is powerful and fragile – it is not designed to suppress freedom.

One of the things Jesus teaches is that calling someone a fool/idiot is closely related to anger, in that it represents a destructive attack on one’s character and identity. Jesus warns us that the person who violates another person made in God’s image in this grievous way is liable to the hell of fire. Followers of Jesus are commanded to treat others with dignity and respect rather than giving anger a place in our human interactions, especially with other Christians. All devaluing of people has no place in the kingdom of God.. How do we respond to Jesus' ethic of honor in the midst of a shame and outrage culture?

So many Christians don’t know what to do with the Old Testament or how to apply it. Sadly, this results in having a low view of the OT and thats unfortunate because Jesus loved the OT and because in it we see the very character of God. If Jesus is who he claims to be, then his opinion should be very influential in shaping our own. Jesus had a high view of Scripture that included all of the Old Testament. He loved and obeyed it. Like Jesus, followers of His are called to the same care and ethic.
