2019 - E3: Bone mineral density in cystic fibrosis patients
18/02/2019 Duração: 15min2019 - E3: Bone mineral density in cystic fibrosis patients Cystic fibrosis (CF)is a common life-limiting autosomal recessive genetic disorder, where gene must be inherited from both parents and it can skip generations. CF is caused by mutation of a gene that encodes a chloride-conducting transmembrane channel called the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), which regulates mucous clearance in the airways. With this increased longevity, a number of new problems have emerged, including low bone mineral density, osteoporotic fractures, and kyphosis. Recent studies from Putman et al provide evidence as to how bone is compromised in CF patients. Full text of the studies can bee found here: https://academic.oup.com/jcem/article/99/9/3399/2538712 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4947435/ Contact: Twitter: @DrAyseZ Email: bonebanter@gmail.com

2019-E2: The effects of physical activity on your bones during adulthood and ageing
10/02/2019 Duração: 13min2019-E2: The effects of physical activity on your bones during adulthood and ageing We discuss the findings from very large longitudinal study from the UK called the National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD). The main findings were: - Greater participation in physical activity over 28 years was positively associated with bone density at all sites. - There were sex differences: greater effects in men than women; these were mainly driven by muscle mass. - Any physical activity that is performed is beneficial for your bones, whether it be at age 36 or 60-64, it's better than not performing ANY at all. The complete study can be found below: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jbmr.3607 Contact: Twitter: @DrAyseZ Email: bonebanter@gmail.com

04/02/2019 Duração: 11minThe cost of fracture & osteoporosis in Australia. This episode reports findings from a recent study published in the Journal of Bone & Mineral Research which shows how much fractures, osteoporosis and osteopenia cost the healthcare system. The main finding was the total direct cost of osteoporosis in Australia in 2017 was estimated to be $3.44 billion - ALOT OF MONEY!! Episode 6.2018 Fatty Bones
26/03/2018 Duração: 09minEpisode 6.2018 Fatty Bones What we learned today: - Fat can accumulate in bone - and that this is called marrow fat - Animal studies have shown that exercise can get rid of this fat - We’re not too sure of how this all works as more research is required - Steroid use (linked to increased fat) increases fracture risk Contact us: Twitter: @DrAyseZ & @Sandroppa Email: bonebanter@gmail.com

Episode 1.2018 - What's all the fuss about?
18/02/2018 Duração: 07minEpisode 1.2018 - What's all the fuss about? Over the summer, a new study came out which suggests that calcium and vitamin D may not do anything for our bones after all. But there is more to this story than meets the eye. Join the team at Bone Group Banter as we dissect this study and along the way learn what a meta-analysis is, why they are important, how they can often be misleading and how these types of studies should be reported.
