  • The Five Stages of Grief - No Time To Die

    30/06/2024

Our film-by-film review of all the Eon-produced James Bond films comes to a close with the latest release, the 2019 film No Time To Die, which was delayed until 2021 due to the pandemic lockdown.Given its denouement, this film takes a somewhat darker tone the closer it gets to the conclusion. As Graham says, "It's not your typical ITV4 James Bond film." Like all Daniel Craig Bond films, this one has an emotional depth that is usually absent in earlier entries.Given the uncertainty of the future of the character and the longevity of the intellectual property, we find ourselves wondering what will become of the franchise and ask ourselves: will James Bond return?Download the podcast here or listen on the player below.      The Oddjob Pod crew are back at the Action Movie Landfil. This time is was Gary's turn to fish out a dusty VHS, slot it into the machine and see if it's worth keeping or chucking back on the pile. His choice? An absolute doozy: Paul Michael Glazer's distopian sci-fi actioner, The Running Man starring Arnold Scwarzenegger.  Download the podcast here or listen on the player below. • The name's Brown, James Brown - Spectre

    14/03/2024

In this particularly brown episode of The Oddjob Pod, Gary, Terry and Graham don their colour corrected glasses and ceremonial Blofeld wigs and take a close look at Spectre. This film was hugely anticipated after the success of Skyfall but doesn't quite land in the way it should despite being a beautifully shot film and a fine example of the Brown genre. • Action Movie Landfill - The Peacemaker (1997)

    06/01/2024

The Oddjob Pod returns for another edition of the Action Movie Landfill. A periodic dive into the almost limitless mound of action films from the sell through era in the late twentieth, early twenty first century. For this episode it was down to Terry to choose and it’s fair to say that he chose… poorly. Not for the first time Terry allowed his fond memories of a film from years gone by to cloud his judgement and selected the political action thriller from 1997: The Peacemaker. Starring Nicole Kidman and George Clooney, this big budget blockbuster was directed by Mimi Leder and reflects that post cold war, pre 911 spot where studio representations of US foreign policy was resolutely in denial of their place in the world. Watching back now it seems naïve. The films crude characterisations and dated tropes mean that it does not hold up to contemporary scrutiny and is best enjoyed with a time machine. • Last Rat Standing: Skyfall

    21/11/2023

Sam Mendes Skyfall marked a a stylistic departure at a time when the James Bond franchise was undergoing a renaissance with the Daniel Craig era. Mendes took what has always been a series of films that has prided itself on lavish productions and elevated the aesthetic to art. The mise en scene, cinematography and set pieces are spectacular and beautiful in equal measure. But the film has its critics: a somewhat hokey and derivative plot and an unsatisfying albeit beautifully shot final act.But the film also has a powerful emotional theme about family obligation. We also see James Bond at something of a crisis point as he approaches the final stanza of his career and is confronted with his own mortality.  Download the podcast here or you can listen to it on the player below. • Action Movie Landfill - Blade

    17/10/2023

Stephen Norrington’s Blade sits if you’ll pardon the pun at the leading edge of big-screen Marvel movies. Not counting Howard The Duck, the 1998 film is the first Marvel superhero to be given a cinema release and heralded the wave of X-Men and films and Disney’s cinematic universe. The film also sits on something of an intersection in 90s Vampire films; the most successful being Neil Jordan’s Interview With A Vampire and Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula which place the vampire as the main protagonist and invite the audience to feel as much sympathy and they do horror. Meanwhile, Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn and Joss Whedon’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer are reviving the old monster rally vibe to the genre, making vampire stories a lot more fun. Buffy the TV series is also injecting a dose of vampire romance and eroticism which would be dominated in the subsequent decade by The Vampire Diaries. In the middle of all this is Blade, himself something of an intersectional character: nei

  • A Quantum of Promise

    03/08/2023

Gary is in the UK so we took the time to get together and record a podcast. This edition is on Daniel Craig's second James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. We had a lot to say about this film. It's one we enjoy despite its flaws, which we discuss in depth. Download the podcast here or you can listen to it on the player below. • Action Movie Landfill - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

    13/07/2023

The Oddjob Pod’s foray into the action movies of the sell-through era continues with Shane Black’s 2005 film, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.Black’s neo-noir satire and homage acts as a comeback movie for one of its stars, Robert Downey Junior whose reputation in Hollywood has taken something of a knock for well-documented reasons. The film is a meta, fourth-wall-breaking action comedy which received a standing ovation at the Cannes film festival and is celebrated by film buffs for its stylish presentation. The film is a beautiful blend of light and dark, contains tremendous chemistry between Downey Junior and his co-star Val Kilmer and showcases the immaculate Michelle Monaghan as Downey Junior’s lost love, Harmony. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang also features an openly gay character, played by Kilmer. We discuss this character and ask how it holds up in 2023. • Snookering you tonight - Casino Royale

    12/06/2023

In this episode of the Oddjob Pod we celebrate Daniel Craig’s first film in the role of James Bond: Casino Royale. If you sat a panel of film critics in front of all 26 James Bond films and asked them to pick the best – not their favourite – but the best, there’s a good chance that most would pick Casino Royale. Daniel Craig was a controversial casting of James Bond and there was an ineffective online campaign against his casting with threats to boycott etc. But Craig proved to be a hugely popular and authentic 007. He was also the beneficiary of an almost flawless production that completely revitalised the James Bond franchise. From the beginning, the film departed from the realm of invisible cars and diamond-encrusted satellite lasers of Die Another Day, opting for a more gritty, violent, and emotionally complex James Bond movie. It drew heavily from contemporary spy thrillers like The Bourne Identity and anchored itself in the original source material, Ian Fleming's novel of the same name, which

  • Action Movie Landfill - Blue Thunder

    20/04/2023

Action Movie Landfill is back, and we are going all the way back to the early years of the Landfill. The helicopter conspiracy action thriller, Blue Thunder, starring Roy Scheider, Malcolm McDowell, Candy Clarke, and the magnificent Warren Oates. This film, written by Dan O'Bannon, was originally intended to be a First Blood in the air but was watered down a bit. Instead, we had what we discovered to be quite a legacy, and we're not just talking about the very bad spin-off TV show. For this episode, we are delighted to welcome a special guest, Jon Hartley. He is a bit of an aviation geek and soon to be co-host of a new movie podcast project, of which more details will follow.Download the podcast here or you can listen to it on the player below. • Turn off retweets for Die Another Day

    22/03/2023

Gary, Graham and Terry complete their review of Pierce Brosnan's canon with Die Another Day.Regular listeners will know that, despite its incredibly strong opening act, this is not our favourite entry. That said every Bond film is somone's favourite and we are mindful of this when expressing our own views. It is, after all, a James Bond film and we love James Bond films. Why else would we do a James Bond podcast? So take a massive bang on the scorpion venom as we get down to Die Another Day.Download the podcast here or you can listen to it on the player below. 20/01/2023

The Action Movie Landfill returns. This time, Terry, Gary and Graham discuss Simon West's pseudo-indie, art house, liberal action blockbuster Con Air.Some of us were genuinly blown away by this film. Not so much by what it's trying to tell us but by what it said.Give it a listen then watch the movie again and let us know what you think.Download the podcast here or you can listen to it on the player below. • Action Movie Landfill: The Transporter

    17/11/2022

The Action Movie Landfill is our side-project that explores the classic (or otherwise) movies made during the golden age of sell-through video. The film we have chosen for this edition, is The Transporter. Made in 2003 it is at the end of the golden age but was still a big hit on the DVD market. The movie is significant for tough guy actor and former diver, Jason Statham who had played memorable supporting roles in Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. In The Transporter, "The Stath" had a vehicle of his own. While not a stonewall classic, this low budget French action flick, co-written by Luc Besson, has a slick European feel combined with some high-octane Hong-Kong style action sequences. The moderately engaging plot serves to move the story from one action set piece to the next and it has a supporting cast that, it is fair to say, are doing their best. We really enjoyed talking about it and hope you enjoy listening. If you've not seen The Transporter, do so before listening to this podc

  • Mind the James Bond gap - Early 90s action movies

    21/06/2022

The early 90s was a fallow period for James Bond fans. With Tim Dalton confirmed as not returning to the role of 007 and Eon Productions embroiled in legal disputes it looked like JB may never return to the big screen. And James Bond was also meeting his match in the shape of a host of ambitious action and spy thrillers produced by the emboldened Hollywood studios. Be they working class heroes like John McClane and Martin Riggs to CIA agent Jack Ryan. Or the big budget Arnold Schwarzenegger blockbuster True Lies and lower budget, innovative action flicks Point Break and Speed. There was also the influence of French action film director Luc Besson on Tinseltown in the shape of the outstanding Leon. Plus many more that we didn't get to.In this edition of the Oddjob Pod we take a look at some of the great action movies that flourished in Bond's absence and ask what kind of challenges they set to the 007 franchise when it finally returned in 1995 with Goldeneye.Download the podcast here or you can listen

  • A Sliding Doors Moment - Licence To Kill

    13/04/2022

No sooner had the Dalton ere started but it finished. The second film starring Timothy Dalton and James Bond 007 has its critics and did not perform as well as had been hoped in the box office. However, for its fans it is an authentic James Bond film with maybe a late 80s action movie twist. Terry, Graham and Gary take great pleasure diving deep into this tale of revenge in which Bond goes rogue. Uncommon for Bond films at the time but a foreshadow of the types of Bond movies to come. Download the podcast here or you can listen to it on the player below.
