Restoring Wabanaki Tribal Sovereignty
22/02/2022 Duração: 01h29minThe Racial Justice Council and the Committee on Indian Relations of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine recently held a public forum in the format of a Zoom webinar in support of LD1626, “An Act Implementing the Recommendations of the Task Force on Changes to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Implementing Act.” Maulian Dana, Ambassador of the Penobscot Nation was the keynote speaker. The Rt. Rev. Thomas J. Brown, Bishop of Maine, offered the opening prayer. If passed, LD1626 will restore to our Wabanaki neighbors their inherent sovereignty over the territories. Maine is the only state in the nation that blocks such sovereignty, denying the Wabanaki tribes and peoples the benefit of over 150 Federal laws and hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funds that respect and protect the rights of the 570 other federally-recognized tribes in the United States.
