Camille Parrain is an Associate Professor in Geography and a sailor who sailed across the Atlantic with her two small children and stayed in the Caribbiean for four years to live the ocean, understand the different cultures, share her passion with the different generations as well as supporting ocean traditions. In this podcast we talk about the ocean, what it means to her and us, slow living, the connection between science and art, and how we must change our way in an effort to save the ocean. Danske Sidse Birk Johannsen (33) er relativ ny som seiler, men har likevel seilt mer og lenger enn de fleste. I fjor cruiset i Østersjøen fra august til desember, og i år satt hun kursen mot Nordsjøen. Vi fikk snakke med den eventyrlystne soloseileren i sin Bostrøm 31 etter at hun hadde krysset over fra Kvitsøy til Lerwick på Shetland.  Nå er hun på vei videre mot Færøyene. Magnus Day is one of the most experienced high-latitude sailors around. With over 200.000 nautical miles under his keel, he has experienced dream destinations like South Georgia, Antarctica, Greenland, Patagonia, and beyond. We caught up with him while he and his wife Julia were getting their own boat Baltazar, a development of the high latitude design Damien II, ready for a three-week passage from New Zealand to French Polynesia to pick his brain about his experiences. Johnny Leo Johansen liker det enkle liv. Da vi traff ham første gang i 2018 bodde han i sin 32 foter i Skrova. Noen år senere, og mange erfaringer fra nord rikere, returnerte han til Fredrikstad. Søndag 30. april startet han på sitt nye eventyr. Denne gangen i en mye enklere og mindre båt: En bindalsfæring. En åpen tradisjonsbåt som både kan seiles og ros. Målet er å leve det enkle liv på kysten til høsten kommer. Da legger han igjen båten der han er, for så å komme tilbake når våren gryr igjen. Det er tross alt en mast og ikke et tørkestativ vi har på båtene våre. Det var kanskje ikke akkurat slik Karl Ruben Gaasø tenkte da han og mannskapet bestemt seg for å gjennomføre påsketuren fra Bergen til Orkenøyene da motoren takket for seg. Men det er kanskje slik flere burde tenke? Det er faktisk mulig å seile mer og lenger, nyte friheten uten dieseldunking ved å utøve litt skikkelig sjømannskap ved å ha en godt utstyrt båt som ikke er avhengig av mye strøm, bra mannskap og evnen til å lese værmeldingene. Starlink har gitt mange seilere en helt ny hverdag - eller en hverdag mer internett-lik den vi har på landjorden. Vi snakket med Nick Weis-Fogh mens han hadde nattevakt på S/Y SkyDancer på vei nordover i Labrador Sea mange hundre nautiske fra både Grønland og Canada. Dekningen var veldig bra. Veronica Skotnes (24) fant tidlig veien i livet: Friluftsliv og en enklere hverdag. I 2020 realiserte hun enda en drøm og kjøpte en 42 fots ketch som hun seilte fra Oslo til Alta.   Celia Bull is a very experienced high latitude sailor based on the Isle of Eigg on the west coast of Scottland. Here she runs Selkie Explorers on the aluminum expedition yacht Selkie. This winter she and Kate, Kristina, and Anne has been exploring the Norwegian coast between Tananger and Måløy. Catherine Lawson has been sailing and writing with her partner David Bristow and their daughter Maya (11) for 20 years. Now they have published a book about how to make sustainable and delicious food while sailing in the warm areas of the world. The book The Hunter and The Gatherer is very inspiring and should be in every ship's library. We just had to have a talk with Catherine while they were anchored in Bau Bau, in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The North Sea in January can be brutal. But we managed to sneak between all the low pressures systems sweeping through the area and sail from Bergen and over to the Up Helly Aa festival in Lerwick, Shetland - and back again. Neither was given.  But with excellent crew work and a boat that can take on everything, Isbjørn, a Swan 48 in the 59North fleet, made all the difference. We got to experience the most fantastic festival, meet the always friendly locals, and some even got to dance to the fiddlers. James "Jim" Dobie was a skipper in the Clipper Round The World Race when he got brutally knocked down in the North Pacific. Of course, he put on a brave face during the incident, you actually have no choice when you are a skipper in a dangerous situation, but inside he was screaming "I want to get off". Back on shore, he wrote the story as it really happened and how it affected him. It is very few skippers that tell it like it really is, and it was really liberating to read his story. So I just had to make a podcast with him. Here he also talks about his plan to take keen sailors who want to invest in a sheared boat and experiences the high latitudes and eventually through the North West Passage. Da Lars Marius Leine fikk tilbud om å seile over Atlanteren av et vennepar grep han sjansen begjerlig. Vel fremme på Barbados etter fin tur over dammen, jobber tankene hans allerede med neste tur. Håvard Tjora er mest kjent som superlæreren, men han er også en seiler med mange mil under redningsvesten. Da han flyttet til Svalbard med familien kjøpte han også en seilbåt og lærte seg å seile på veien opp og ikke minst på Svalbard. Deretter ble det tur over atlanteren. I hans nye bok "MOT til å våge" er hans oppevelser under hvite seil en viktig del når han snakker om mot. Dette er en bok som absolutt er verdt å lese, både for seiler og alle andre. The Arctic is changing fast, and David Thoreson, a professional photographer, explorer, and sailor, has, among a whole bunch of other things, been to the North West Passage four times to witness it and document it. He has transited the notorious stretch two times. We talked to him about how an adventurous boy from the midwest became a high latitude sailor and a storyteller with a climate perspective.
