  • Why I Love Matthew McConaughey

    17/11/2016 Duração: 06min

I recorded an audio version of this essay for folks who would rather listen. It's only 4min and 20 seconds. And, it has music with it. ------------------------"Why I Love Matthew McConaughey"------------------------- I used to be terrified on days when I had something to share. The fear came from two angles: One: everyone in the entire world would be reading, and Two: No one would be reading. I was afraid of judgement and, I was afraid no one cared. The entire conflict was within myself. The "work" wasn't just the writing, it was also the act of "sharing". The battle was, and still is, an inward one: a fight that takes place behind the scenes. --- The moment I start a sentence that says something scary and true: The work begins. I recognize something that I'm afraid to share, and then, I figure out how to explain it. I have to discover "why". And the only way I've ever been able to discover is through writing: An exploration of emotion in the form of literature. --- Before stepping in front

  • Inside The Minds Eye with/ Hayes Johnson

    13/08/2016 Duração: 02h20s

Hayes Johnson was homeless, traveling a nomadic lifestyle for the better part of 10 years. From smoking crystal meth, to vagabonding on trains, to pursuing a path of sobriety; Hayes shares his life experience as a performance artist. Swallowing swords, hammering nails into his face, rapping, singing, playing guitar... Hayes has cultivated a skill set that allows him to build a crowd in any arena, be it the street, or the stage. He offers art in the form of sideshow entertainment. But, he gets nervous every time he performs. Fear, anxiety, and self-doubt. As soon as he begins to speak, as soon as he takes a plunge into the unknown, allowing himself to be seen, something happens. He's given gusto, a surge of wind, carrying him through the performance. A few weeks ago, we drove to his home, "The Black Hold Bordello", to catch a conversation. • Jennifer Ann Butler

    09/06/2016 Duração: 01h09min

Today, on Inside the Minds Eye, a conversation with Jennifer Ann Butler: writer, doodler, creative, and spiritual savant. Butler has spent most of her life struggling with depression. Last October, she began the arduous process of weaning herself off of anti-depressants. After her medications had been discontinued completely, she began to experience emotions that had left her, for lack of a better word, confused. Intense feelings of happiness, sadness, and all-around existential angst. Jen re-formatted her life to allow for holistic means it self-care. Excercises, healthy eating, and a regiment of transparent honesty in the face of complex emotional states. Mindfulness. She began to redirect her thoughts towards positive affirmations while maintaining honest and open communication. She used her writing, and her voice, to share these feelings with a network of people experiencing similar afflictions of the mind. During this journey, she managed to funnel her energy into a book titled, "Imperfect" (Ho

  • "I Survived Myself" an Essay on Depression

    16/05/2016 Duração: 11min

Last October, Jennifer Ann Butler changed the direction of her website by taking a personal leap. She had written an essay exploring a part of herself that was yet to be seen by the world...an introspective exploration about her battle with depression. Prior to publishing, Butler spoke of mostly spiritual, holistic topics... Rather than create a new blog to separate her vulnerable self from her spiritual self, Butler took a chance and decided to share her own truth. After releasing this essay, Jen began to explore her insecurities, publicly, for the world to see. A few months later, she was inspired to draft a manuscript. This is "I Survived Myself", an essay on depression: Jennifer Butler is a writer whose primary focus is connecting and inspiring through unabashed honesty. She looks forward to utilizing her story and approach to do inspirational speaking so as to help others embrace their sensitivities. She enjoys hugging trees, picking up litter, and talking to her dog, Floyd. Check out her blog at

  • Dadge Parrish #ForeverMusik (PART 1)

    27/04/2016 Duração: 48min

When the cell door shut, reality closed in around him. 30 years... He would be 48 before he'd ever take a free breath. His dream of pursuing a career as a musician ended with the turning of a cell key. But, he refused to believe he was committed for life. He took his thoughts and projected them towards freedom. His days were spent learning law; studying his case and developing the means to represent himself. In a legal system that allowed for a change of representation at any moment, he had to understand his situation. His energy went towards knowledge, while his body gravitated away from music. The rap on the radio, the other inmates spouting poetry in the form of rhythm and rhyme... The idea of becoming a rapper haunted him. He would never manifest his dreams while locked in a cage... He avoided music for a time, focusing his thoughts towards something he could control. Developing the education and awareness to see himself through. To survive the onslaught of cruel conformity and oppression. To g

  • Chris Gregory

    11/04/2016 Duração: 01h19min

Chris Gregory realized he wanted to be a rapper when he was 8 years old. As he grew, Chris began to use his creativity to counter the environment of gang activity and sordid social pressures surrounding Miami, FL. Rapping became an outlet for his own frustration in response to the world around him. Rather than be part of a system that produced gang violence, drug abuse, and negativity, Chris dove head first into music, cultivating a voice to combat the instabilities of every day life. Rap music became his therapy. An open forum of self-expression where he could escape into his mind and develop something positive in an environment that begged to hold him down. • Inside the Minds Eye w/ Lucien Smith

    15/02/2016 Duração: 36min

Creating this podcast has provided me with a gift of release, an opportunity to explore my thoughts and my emotions in the form of art. A form for creativity and self-expression to hold. An art form that uses a collaboration of things I love... Music, writing, storytelling, people, and the passions that drive us. Since his passing, I have thought of Lucien every day. I've plotted and planned the idea behind this episode. I've spoken with friends, family, and sometimes strangers... I've been mentored by other artists who have no idea I exist. I've spoken to an audience that I've imagined, and in the process, I've captured an emotion that I have been struggling to understand for months: Grief. I've spoken to the memory of a friend, a spirit that even now, months after his passing, continues to influence my words, and my actions. Lucien's story is a courageous example of why we must pursue our passions while we are here. The dreams we have, the ideas we imagine, are meant for exploring. Every one o
