In our study today, when Jacob arrives in the Promised Land, we are told that he “dwelt” there. The word “dwelt” means he “settled” or “squatted” there. Unlike his fathers before him, Jacob saw Hebron as his permanent home. As we move on in our study in Genesis, we are going to see how God changed Jacob’s mindset from that of a citizen of this world to that of a stranger living in a foreign land. And the process He takes him through is important to observe because in many ways it mirrors the things the Lord does in our lives to bring us to a place to where we too see ourselves as strangers and pilgrims in this world and not squatters. In Joel 2:25‑26 the Lord says to the people of Israel after they had been devastated by a great plague: “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten. . . .My great army which I sent among you. Someone once said that the way to avoid backsliding is to stay off the slopes. But the problem is, we can’t avoid the slopes of life—especially if we are walking through this world as Christians. Life is an uphill battle and so we are either going forward or we are backsliding. Back in the mid 1900’s Albert Bramley penned these words in his famous hymn This World Is Not My Home: This world is not my home, I’m just a passing through My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore! Bramley here gives us a vivid description of how all believers should feel as we live our lives on this earth. We should live as pilgrims passing through life and not as settlers looking to be assimilated into the culture in which live. In today’s lesson, Jacob will put his family in a position where they are danger of being assimilated into the pagan culture of Shechem. God doesn’t allow it to happen, but if He had, there would be no such thing as Israel, and no such thing as a Jewish Messiah. George
