Today we talk with two experts on the matter, Jeff Yeager, who has been dubbed 'The Ultimate Cheapskate' and actress Annie Korzen who recently authored the book 'Bargain Junkie'. Segment B: Keeping up with 'The Joneses' Most every neighborhood houses a family that appears to be perfect and always has the latest and greatest consumer goods. Local Derrick Borte, raised in Norfolk and a current resident of Virginia Beach, has written and directed a soon-to-premiere feature film, The Joneses, that pulls back the curtain on one of these seemingly enviable families and reveals a startling twist - they're really stealth marketers. We'll talk with Borte about the film and his experience ushering it from page to screen.

It's Carl Kasell Day!
29/03/2010Longtime NPR newscaster Carl Kasell retired his alarm clock, and from his job with Morning Edition in December. That doesn't mean he's taking it easy. We'll talk to him about his career in broadcasting, his ongoing role as judge and scorekeeper on Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! and his newest role with NPR, Roving Ambassador, which brings him to our studio. Those who miss hearing Carl Kasell during morning newscasts on Morning Edition, and aren't lucky enough to have his voice on their answering machine, will want to tune in for a conversation with the man himself.

Segment B: Minds Wide Open - Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts Starting this month and continuing through June, thousands of special events will take place across the Commonwealth to honor contributions to arts and culture made by women. Today we'll talk with CPA Jean Moses about the changes in tax code you should know about. We'll also take your questions at 440-2665, 1-800-940-2240 or through hearsay@whrv.org.Segment B: Gloucester 40 This year's Daily Press 'Citizens of the Year' award went to the 'Gloucester 40'. This group of citizens grew concerned about the actions of their County Board of Supervisors and decided to petition the circuit court to ask that the officials be removed. What happened next took them by surprise - the judge who received the petitions threw them out and fined the group $80,000. They have appealed the fines and the Virginia Supreme Court will hear their case later this month - tune in to learn more about this fascinating group.

22/03/2010Segment A: Flight from Monticello Michael Kranish is an author, historian and the Washington correspondent for The Boston Globe. During the 2004 Presidential campaign he began exploring the possibility of authoring a history on the Revolutionary War and came across the story of the 1781 invasion of Virginia, which caused then-Governor Thomas Jefferson and the legislature to abandon the capital in Richmond. This little-explored episode from Jefferson's life lit a spark of inspiration for Kranish and the resulting book Flight from Monticello: Thomas Jefferson at War has garnered rave reviews. It's a Conspiracy...
05/03/2010Conspiracy theories abound, with some people swearing that astronauts never really landed on the moon, that 9/11 was an inside job or that the death of Princess Diana was an elaborate hoax. Journalist David Aaronovitch would come across people with these beliefs and was never sure how to respond, so he put his journalistic training to good use and researched the origins of some of the more prominent theories out there. He published his findings in Voodoo Histories: The Role of the Conspiracy Theory in Shaping Modern History and today we'll talk to him about his findings.
