386 - Matthew 8:5-17
11/08/2019Message #386, Matthew 8:5-17, "Faith's Unconsidered Cost" Sunday, August 11, 2019 We continue in Matthew chapter eight, studying three more examples of Jesus power and authority. His compassionate exercise of both are set before us as proof that Jesus was the promised Messiah. In this study, we'll consider Jesus' healing of the centurion's servant, of Peter's mother-in-law, and of the multitudes. Our sermon questions are as follows: 1) Do I understand the exercise of God's authority for my benefit is an expression of His grace? That it is not a response to my worthiness or to my works? 2) What are the purposes of God's promises? 3) Do I look to God for all things, whether I perceive they are big or small? 4) Whose needs am I aware of that Jesus is inviting me to bring to Him? How can I do this so that they have an opportunity to believe Jesus is the promised Messiah? Jesus' compassionate exercise of both are set before us as proof that He was the promised Messiah. In this study, we'll look at the first of these ten examples with the cleansing of the leper. Our sermon questions for this and the remainder of chapters 8-9 are: 1) What do the healing works of Jesus teach us about Him? 2) What are the purposes of God's promises? 384 - Matthew 7:1-29
28/07/2019Message #384, Matthew 7:1-29, "Pilgrim or Pretender?" Sunday, July 28, 2019 Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount with a challenge to His disciples to examine themselves in light of all Jesus has just taught. Jesus encourages them with two promises that are essential for their growth. And Jesus warns them against external and internal threats, including the risk of self-deception. Our sermon questions are: Why must I Biblically assess my life before I help another believer? And why is prayer critical to both? (Matthew 7:1-12) What is God's measure of true discipleship? How do discernment and obedience protect me from deception? This humbling instruction from Jesus builds upon the previous chapter's lessons on the disciple God blesses and how our God is concerned with both the outward actions and the inward motives. Our sermon questions are: How does my relationship with God affect how I give? How should I give so that my heavenly Father is glorified? (Matthew 6:1-4) What is prayer? 380 - Matthew 5:31-48
30/06/2019Message #380, Matthew 5:31-48, “They Say or God Said?” Sunday, June 30, 2019 We finish out Matthew 5 with an overview of the Sermon on the Mount thus far. We observe Jesus' pattern of correcting what His disciples have heard regarding the Scriptures from the Scribes and Pharisees, with what God originally intended. The goal being the humbling of the listener, to see their need for God rather than futile efforts of self righteousness. The sermon questions this week are: 1) Why is it so important to understand what the Bible teaches in light of the whole Bible? 2) How shall we be perfect, just as our Father in heaven is perfect? They range from the suspicion of Herod the Great, to the indifference of the chief priests and scribes, to the reverence and worship of the wise men from the east. 370 - Philippians 3:8-10
21/04/2019Message #370, Philippians 3:8-10, "The Power of His Resurrection" Sunday, April 21, 2019, Happy Resurrection Sunday! This Easter Sunday message is focused on answering two questions about the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Why does the resurrection of Jesus matter? What are the results of Jesus' resurrection? A) It matters because Jesus commanded it to be a central part of the gospel message. B) His resurrection is essential to the experience of our new life as new creations in Christ. C) Belief in the resurrection of Christ is pivotal to our salvation from sin, Hell, and death unto forgiveness, Heaven, and eternal life. D) Jesus' resurrection is part of the highest ambition any believer can pursue. In it's pursuit, the true believer will sacrifice anything to attain it. E)The significance of Christ's resurrection results in my desire to know Him more!
