Starting way back in Florida, as an outfielder, Cabrera helped the Marlins beat the Yankees. Paddy takes everyone through the career (so far) of the arguably best pure hitters the game has ever seen. Kevin starts the episode by dedicating a segment to Miguel Cabrera and his accomplishment of reaching 3,000 hits. He is one of only 7 players to reach 3,000 hits and 500 HR for his career. He had 11 consecutive seasons of over 177 hits, but only had 1 season of over 200 hits. Miggy just adds to his first ballot hall of fame resume. It is tough to determine what is "for real" during the spring and what is just players "working on things". The Tennessee Volunteers continue to have perhaps the best regular season of any team in the history of college baseball. One metric system has them ranked as the top team of all time currently. Kevin starts the show by talking about the rule changes that were announced for the 2022 season. The "Shohei Ohtani" Rule has been implemented, active rosters have been expanded for the month of April, and the most controversial of the new rules, the "ghost runner" starting at second base in extra innings remains for the 2022 season. Kevin then discusses the "All MLB Underrated Team". In order to qualify for this team, a player cannot have any awards or nominations during his career so far. Kevin starts the episode by talking about Carlos Rodon signing with the Giants and Clayton Kershaw returning to the Dodgers. The two NL West powers continue to make moves to improve their rosters in anticipation of what should be another classic divisional race. Kershaw took a hometown discount to return to the Dodgers, and Rodon gives himself an opportunity to make even more money with an opt out after year one. Kevin then talks about the Mets adding all-star starter Chris Bassitt to their already loaded rotation. DeGrom, Scherzer, Bassitt is as good of a 1 through 3 in the MLB. There will now be a universal DH, 12 total playoff teams, and an international draft. There will also be an increase to the minimum salary, a bonus pool for arbitration eligible players, and service time improvement. There is a ton to talk about. Kevin then discusses the top remaining available free agents. He also gives a bold prediction on where everyone will sign. Freddie Freeman to the Dodgers? Carlos Correa to the Yankees? In arguably the most shocking event to come out of these slow-moving CBA negotiations, the Major League Baseball Players Association has agreed to rid itself of the over-shift that has impeded hitters for years. This move is incredibly shocking as both sides have already agreed to incredible changes already. The National League, for example, will add the designated hitter to is list of positions. Patrick breaks down this and what else has been happening in the sport. Following the CBA talk, Patrick then breaks down dome potential post-lockout trades that could really shake up the power structure in MLB. Kevin starts the episode by discussing the fact that the MLB and MLBPA could not come to an agreement before the deadline to cancel regular season games. The first two series of the season have been cancelled and Kevin believes it is just a precursor to the first month of the season being cancelled. If we are lucky "opening day" will be May 1st. Kevin then talks college baseball. There was not a ton of movement in the top 25 from last week and the top 10 took care of business. There are multiple top 25 match ups this weekend that will be fun to watch. Kevin also gives his top pitchers to keep and eye on early in the NCAA season. Patrick spends the first part of today's show breaking down what needs to be known about the CBA. These two sides are far from close, and it does not look like there will be a deadline, and Paddy tells everyone what to expect. After that Paddy takes a look at two of the most important people to the MLBPA and Free Agency. First Patrick talks to the first executive director of the MLPA Marvin Miller. Under MIller the MLBPA grew to become one of the most powerful unions in the United States, and he was able to help create Free Agency. Paddy also talks about Jim "Catfish" Hunter, who was the first "big-money free agent", and is the only person to have their number retired by the Athletic's since the 1920s.
