  • Deep Natter 07: A Narrow Representation

    06/08/2021 Duração: 42min

In this episode, Sean Tucker and I are talking about some of the challenges of bringing focus back from our various social media platforms to our own websites, which in many ways are the only places we have online that allow us to really curate how our work is presented to an audience. We also talk about how much we miss communities and how easy it has become to simply retreat into creative isolation. The Talented Mr. RipleyPhantom ThreadRobin Williams’ speech in Good Will HuntingWerner Herzog MasterclassThe PeregrineCONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photographyTwitter: @seantuckInstagram: @seantuckYouTube: Sean Tucker CONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.comTwitter: @jefferysaddorisInstagram: @jefferysaddoris BE A PART OF THE SHOWYou can listen to Deep Natter live and be a part of the conversations on Tuesdays at 2pm ET on Clubhouse. SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed. MUSICHigh Line by DuffmusiqMus

  • Deep Natter 06: Stuck on the Hamster Wheel of Good

    30/07/2021 Duração: 45min

In this episode, we’re talking about chasing objective good in art making and selling out to please an audience versus making strategic choices to keep an audience engaged with the work we make. We also share a few things you might want to check out to help level up your inspiration. LINKSThe Rewatchables PodcastThe GameThe RevanentBarry LyndonShot DeckNational Gallery of ArtMaking the CutThe New Propaganda, vol. 1Dorothy Simpson Krause CONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photographyTwitter: @seantuckInstagram: @seantuckYouTube: Sean Tucker CONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.comTwitter: @jefferysaddorisInstagram: @jefferysaddoris BE A PART OF THE SHOWYou can listen to Deep Natter live and be a part of the conversations on Tuesdays at 2pm ET on Clubhouse. SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed. MUSICHigh Line by DuffmusiqMusic featured in this episode is licensed from Artlist, which is a terrific music li

  • Deep Natter 05: Getting Beyond the Skills We Know

    23/07/2021 Duração: 40min

In this episode, Sean talks about a recent trip to London where he may have had his most productive day of photography ever, which is a pretty bold statement. We also talk about the importance of inspirational friends as well as our shared appreciation for the work of Richard Avedon, Don McCullin, and Sally Mann. CONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photographyTwitter: @seantuckInstagram: @seantuckYouTube: Sean Tucker CONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.comTwitter: @jefferysaddorisInstagram: @jefferysaddoris BE A PART OF THE SHOWYou can listen to Deep Natter live and be a part of the conversations on Tuesdays at 2pm ET on Clubhouse. SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed. MUSICHigh Line by DuffmusiqMusic featured in this episode is licensed from Artlist, which is a terrific music licensing platform for YouTubers and filmmakers. • Some Sort of Self-Worth Value Thing: Bill Wadman

    21/07/2021 Duração: 01h10s

The other day I was on the phone with Bill Wadman and it didn’t take long before Bill asked “wait, should we be rolling tape on this?” When you’ve recorded 1000 or so hours with someone, the answer is usually yes. I just wish we had been rolling from the beginning, because when Bill called, he asked what I was doing and I said that I was listening to Steve Perry. Without missing a beat, Bill launched into the opening bars of Oh Sherrie and we both started cracking up. Here's the rest of the conversation. CONNECT WITH BILLWebsite: https://billwadman.comTwitter: @billwadmanInstagram: @billwadman CONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.comTwitter: @jefferysaddorisInstagram: @jefferysaddoris Music in this episodeFive to One by Steve PoloniAll of the music featured in this episode is licensed from Artlist.io, which is a terrific music licensing platform for YouTubers and filmmakers. • Process Driven 42: Brooke Shaden

    13/07/2021 Duração: 56min

Brooke Shaden is one of a select few artists who manages to consistently create work that is so visceral and resonates so deeply that it makes me want to step into the picture so I can inhabit that world, even for a moment. Her work is sometimes haunting, sometimes dark, sometimes disturbing, but always interesting and challenging enough, both conceptually and technically, that I’ve been a fan for years and am always eager to see what she comes up with next. I’ve wanted to talk to her for a long time and I’m so grateful that we could make this happen. CONNECT WITH BROOKEWebsite: https://brookeshaden.com/Facebook: Brooke Shaden PhotographyInstagram: @brookeshaden CONNECT WITH MEWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.comTwitter: @jefferysaddorisInstagram: @jefferysaddoris MUSICNormalize by Stanley GurvichPlease Listen Carefully by Jahzzar (CC BY-SA 4.0)Music featured in this episode is licensed from Artlist, which is a terrific music licensing platform for YouTubers and filmmakers. • Deep Natter 04: What Does Looking Back Get You?

    09/07/2021 Duração: 43min

In this episode, Sean and I are talking about the idea of revisiting older work. Some people find value in looking back over what they’ve done, while others never do and instead are always looking to what comes next. While Sean and I have a few similarities around it, there are definitely some differences in how each of us relates to our previous bodies of work. LINKSTalking Funny (Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Ricky Gervais, and Louis CK) CONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.comTwitter: @jefferysaddorisInstagram: @jefferysaddoris CONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photographyTwitter: @seantuckInstagram: @seantuckYouTube: Sean Tucker BE A PART OF THE SHOWYou can listen to Deep Natter live and be a part of the conversations on Tuesdays at 2pm ET on Clubhouse. SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed. MUSICHigh Line by DuffmusiqMusic featured in this episode is licensed from Artlist, which is a terrific music l

  • Deep Natter 03: Perfection and Other Fairy Tales

    05/07/2021 Duração: 40min

In this episode of Deep Natter, Sean Tucker and I are talking about perfection. They say that practice makes perfect, but I think as makers, deep down most of us know that perfect really doesn’t exist. Good? Sure. Great? Maybe, occasionally. But perfect? Not in my experience. So why do we keep chasing it? Well, that’s exactly what Sean and I are going to talk about and it all starts with a quote by one of Sean’s favorite authors, Richard Rohr. LINKSRichard Rohr – Another Name for EverythingRam Dass – Be Here NowThey’ll Love Me When I’m DeadThe Last Picture Show CONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.comTwitter: @jefferysaddorisInstagram: @jefferysaddoris CONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photographyTwitter: @seantuckInstagram: @seantuckYouTube: Sean Tucker BE A PART OF THE SHOWYou can listen to Deep Natter live and be a part of the conversations on Tuesdays at 2pm ET on Clubhouse. SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I releas

  • Deep Natter 02: Chasing Idea Fuel

    29/06/2021 Duração: 47min

In this episode of Deep Natter, we're talking about effort, specifically whether and how and to what degree effort is connected to the value of the things we make. To help illustrate how effort can affect or influence the end product, we refer to a couple terrific films by Werner Herzog. If you would like to listen to these conversations live or participate with a question or comment, join us on the Clubhouse app Tuesdays at 2pm Eastern. LINKSLove languages by Gary ChapmanHeart of DarknessFitzcrraldoConquest of the Useless: Reflections from the Making of FitzcarraldoBurden of DreamsAguirre Wrath of GodBert Kreisher and Casey NeistetCasey Neistat CONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.comTwitter: @jefferysaddorisInstagram: @jefferysaddoris CONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photographyTwitter: @seantuckInstagram: @seantuckYouTube: Sean Tucker BE A PART OF THE SHOWYou can listen to Deep Natter live and be a part of the conversations on Tuesdays at 2pm ET on Clubhouse. SUBSCRIBESubscr

  • Deep Natter 01: You Can’t Control the Response

    28/06/2021 Duração: 39min

In this debut episode of Deep Natter, Sean and I are talking about long-term projects and curating our own work. Each of us have been circling a personal project for years and as luck would have it, coming out of a global pandemic was just the catalyst we needed to stop thinking and start doing. We also talk about the importance of making the things you want to see in the world, rather than worrying about how they might be received by an audience and Sean shares one of his favorite recent books. LINKSA Guide to the Good Life by William B. • In Between 24: Legacy, a Lifeboat, and a Rottweiler

    18/05/2021 Duração: 57min

Lately I seem to be having more and more conversations with people who have really started taking a long look back on their lives to try to determine to what degree anything they’ve done matters and whether or not it will keep mattering after they’ve gone. For many of them, these musings revolve around a major accomplishment or a specific body of work that was somehow more, for lack of a better word, than most — if not all — of the other things that they have done. Many have even used the term “calling” to describe it. Personally, I’ve not experienced that, at least not in the way that it’s been described to me. I think my life has been different in that I’ve done a bunch of smaller things that, when looked at together, form something that is greater and much more fulfilling that the sum of its parts. I was talking about this with Jack Lowe who you might remember from episodes 37 and 38 of Process Driven and we thought that it might be a perfect topic for another chance to record. So get comfortable, because

  • Iteration 65: When the Teacher Disappears

    12/05/2021 Duração: 10min

I think one of the things that made Father Bill Moore so important to me was the fact that he was one of a small group of non-family members and non-friends to say that I had talent as a painter and that I had something to say with my work and he was one of an even smaller group of people who I would consider a mentor in my life. This is probably something for another time, but I don’t think you can seek out a mentor — not intentionally and not with any real specificity in terms of who that person will be. That’s the way I feel about all of the mentors in my life. I never sought them out, but somehow our paths crossed and my life was made better for it. And hopefully theirs were too.SHOW NOTESFather Bill Moore – https://frbillmoore.com/The Father Bill Moore Foundation – https://fatherbill.artThe dA Center for the Arts – https://www.dacenter.orgPomona Arts Colony – https://www.pomonaartscolony.com Music in this episodeReconciled by Sean WilliamsThe Wrong Way by Jahzzar (CC BY-SA 4.0)Music featured in this epis

  • Process Driven 41: Ben Horne

    22/04/2021 Duração: 01h09min

I think Ben Horne and I first talked about recording together in 2018, not long after I was introduced to his work. But as John Lennon famously said, “Life is what happens when you’re making other plans” and for one reason or another, we just couldn’t get our schedules in sync, but I am so grateful that we were able to circle back around and make this happen. I am a huge fan of Ben’s work. I think one of his superpowers as a photographer is capturing the quiet drama of big places — subjects and scenes that most of us would simply ignore if we even noticed them at all. It’s beautiful work and I’m happy to finally connect with Ben to talk about it. LINKSZion National ParkYosemite National ParkDeath Valley National ParkColorado Plateau Film RevealBen’s Portfolio Box Set CONNECT WITH BENWebsite: https://www.benhorne.comTwitter: @BenHorneInstagram: @benhornephoto CONNECT WITH MEWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.comTwitter: @jefferysaddorisInstagram: @jefferysaddoris MUSICNormalize by Stanley GurvichWhat Have We Los

  • Process Driven 40: Marc Wilson

    11/03/2021 Duração: 01h13min

While I’ve never really done one myself — not intentionally anyway — I am fascinated by long-term creative projects. I find the whole idea of intentionally and purposefully immersing yourself in something you know is going to take years to realize both inspiring and a little terrifying. But I guess if you find the right project, the challenges, obstacles and accidents both happy and unhappy make the journey of bringing whatever it is to life that much more rewarding.Marc Wilson is a photographer in the UK who has completed two such projects back to back. From 2010 to 2014, he produced a body of work called The Last Stand which, in his words “aims to reflect the histories and stories military conflict and the memories held in the landscape itself.” In 2015, after releasing the body of work as a book, he began work on his next project, A Wounded Landscape – bearing witness to the Holocaust, which is based around 22 Holocaust survivor stories. The six-year project, culminating in a 750-page book, was made at mor

  • Process Driven 39: Elliot Walker & Bethany Wood

    06/03/2021 Duração: 01h25min

In the middle of 2019, Netflix launched a show called Blown Away, which is a competition show for glass artists. The promos looked terrific and I think Adrianne and I were hooked from pretty much the first episode. We binged the whole season and it became sort of our go to recommendation for our Netflix-watching friends. I even reached out to Alex Rosenberg, one of the contestants on the show, who I sat down with for an episode of Process Driven.Fast forward to the beginning of this year when Netflix finally released season two of Blown Away and for the next ten episodes, Adrianne and I were right back in the hot shop with a new group of artists. And just like with season one, I knew I wanted to talk to one of the contestants and I knew exactly who I wanted it to be. Both Adrianne and I were fans of Elliot Walker straight away. There was just something about his demeanor in the shop, not to mention that we absolutely loved what he made on the show. I really resonated with his approach to the materials, and th

  • My Shows, Your Way

    22/02/2021 Duração: 05min

As many of you know, I currently produce three different podcasts, each with a different format and purpose. Process Driven is a deep dive conversation with a single artist to talk about what they do and why they do it. In Between is a conversation with a recurring group of co-hosts around a single topic or theme. Iterations is my audio journal — it’s shorter than the other two shows and it’s just me offering up thoughts or reflections around what I’ve recently been thinking about or trying to work through. As I said, each of these shows offers a different listening experience, but in many ways I see them as part of the same larger, ongoing conversation. As you might expect, each of the three shows has its own feed and if you want all of them, until last year you had to subscribe to all three individually. But early in 2020 I looked a little deeper at how people were listening to podcasts, and what I found was that most people don’t listen to every episode of every podcast they subscribe to. I know I don’t. I

  • Process Driven 38: Jack Lowe [Part Two]

    19/02/2021 Duração: 40min

In Process Driven 37, I had part one of this two part conversation with Documentarist, Jack Lowe. And while you don’t need to have listened to part one to enjoy this conversation, I invite you to go back and listen to it if you haven’t. Among other things, we talked about the origins of Jack’s Lifeboat Station Project, which has him traveling to all 238 lifeboat stations around the UK in his mobile darkroom Neena to make photographs with his 12×10 inch wet plate camera. In this conversation, we talk about some of the motivations for the project and the supportive community that has grown around it, as well as what Jack hopes people will take away from the body of work as a whole. And just as we did in part one, we go down a few rabbit holes and, of course, talk a bit more about The Life Aquatic. LINKSThe Life AquaticPart One of this conversation CONNECT WITH JACKWebsite: https://lifeboatstationproject.comTwitter: @ProjectLifeboat MUSICReconciled by Sean WilliamsNormalize by Stanley GurvichPlease Listen Carefu

  • Process Driven 37: Jack Lowe [Part One]

    12/02/2021 Duração: 01h28min

At the beginning of the year, I released an episode called Setting the Intention for 2021, and one of the things I talked about was how I wanted to make some changes to my shows, both in who I approach to record with and in how I actually produce and edit the episodes, for example using music and sound effects to enhance the ambience or atmosphere of an episode when it’s appropriate and serves the story. The first person I met on the back of all of this was Jack Lowe and I can’t really even tell you where I first heard his name or saw photos from his Lifeboat Station Project – most likely it was something that popped up on Twitter which over the past several months has become a terrific way for me to discover new work and connect with interesting people. Regardless, once I dove into a bit of Jack’s work, I knew I wanted to talk to him. LINKSAmbient Isolation: https://www.ambientisolation.comMatthew George Tuckey: @MGTuckeyJack’s Dawn Chorus: https://m.soundcloud.com/mrjacklowe/sets/dawn-chorusDaniel Meadows: h

  • The Value of Value

    20/01/2021 Duração: 44min

One of the hardest things about being an artist — beyond the actual making of the art — is deciding how to value the work we make. For many of us — and I’m putting myself squarely in the middle on this — the art I make is very personal, even though visually it may not seem like it. And, if I’m being honest, it’s not just the art, but the design, the podcasts, the books, basically anything that I’m applying any sort of purposeful effort into is personal. And isn’t that the way it should be? I know this might be a corny reference but saying that just now reminded me of a movie with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan called you’ve got mail. Meg plays Kathleen, the owner of this little book shop in New York and Tom plays Joe, the owner of a big box book chain that ends up forcing Kathleen to close her shop, which coincidentally belonged to her mother. Anyway, at one point in the movie Joe apologizes to Kathleen for driving her out of business, saying that it was nothing personal. Kathleen, says something like “What is that s

  • Setting the Intention for 2021

    02/01/2021 Duração: 06min

Like many of you, I could not be happier to finally be rid of the raging dumpster fire that was 2020. I know the next year will be anything but easy, but I am cautiously optimistic that 2021 will be filled with new possibilities and chances to do things a little differently than last year.I started doing yoga about a month ago and Adrianne reminded me that there’s a concept in yoga about setting an intention at the beginning of a practice and while I’m not a fan of resolutions per se, I wanted to share a few things today that I’ve been thinking about for a while as a way of setting my intentions for the year ahead. To that end, I want to let you know about some of the changes that I’m making both personally and professionally moving forward.Let’s start with my shows. Early in 2020 I created a new feed called “Jeffery Saddoris: Everything” as a way for you to get everything I release, including Process Driven, In Between, Iterations, and any sort of one-off conversation, like the recent chat with Bill Wadman, a
