Sinopse

We are seeing an ever-increasing burden of chronic disease, primarily driven by our food and food system. This is perpetuated by agricultural, food and health care policies that dont support health. We need to rethink disease and reimagine a food system and a health care system the protects health, unburdens the economy from the weight of obesity and chronic disease, protects the environment, helps reverse climate change and creates a nation of healthy children and citizens. This podcast is a place for deep conversations about the critical issues of our time in the space of health, wellness, food and politics. New episodes are released every Wednesday morning. I hope you'll join me.

  • The Harmful Effects Of Glyphosate, The Most Common Agrochemical with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

    29/07/2020 Duração: 01h09min

The Harmful Effects Of Glyphosate, The Most Common Agrochemical | This episode is brought to you by Tushy and ButcherBox We’re living in an age where it’s increasingly hard to avoid exposure to toxins. Some of the most ubiquitous are right on our food, on some of the most commonly eaten items in the American diet. It’s no wonder that illnesses related to toxicity, like cancer, infertility, and neurological diseases, are on the rise. The most widely used pesticide in our food supply is glyphosate. It’s used all over the world on more than 70 different food crops, including corn, soy, and wheat and is linked to some serious health risks, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It’s terrifying to consider that a bowl of Cheerios has more glyphosate per serving than vitamins D and B12, both of which are added to try to boost nutritional value.  We need to change our food system if we want to change our health, and it’s issues like these that need our help. I was so happy to sit down with my good friend Robert F. Kennedy

  • Male Menopause, Low Libido, And Testosterone Replacement with Dr. George Papanicolaou

    27/07/2020 Duração: 41min

Male Menopause, Low Libido, And Testosterone Replacement | This episode is brought to you by Audible Many of us are living life completely out of balance—and the type of imbalance that affects almost everyone in our society is hormonal imbalance. Men tend to have declining hormone levels as they age, and low testosterone can cause men to lose muscle and gain fat, leading to sexual dysfunction, low sex drive, fatigue, mental fogginess, and bone loss. However, making changes to your diet and lifestyle can have an incredible effect on rebalancing hormone levels and increasing testosterone. Additionally, testosterone replacement therapy can also be used to rebalance your hormones and increase happiness, vitality, and health.  In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papanicolaou to discuss the functional medicine approach to treating low testosterone and how they determine when to use hormone replacement therapy. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and

  • Reversing Metabolic Disease

    24/07/2020 Duração: 16min

Reversing Metabolic Disease | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley Only 1 in 8 Americans are considered metabolically healthy (think obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension). Our poor metabolic health is driving our chronic disease epidemic and putting people at higher risk of experiencing severe complications from COVID-19, if they are to get the virus. The good news is that it is possible to become metabolically healthy in a matter of months, if not weeks. In recent conversations with Dr. Aseem Malhotra and Chris Kresser, Dr. Hyman discusses the drivers of poor metabolic health and how, with the right support, making changes to your diet and lifestyle can rapidly optimize your health. Dr. Aseem Malhotra is a founding member of Action on Sugar and was the lead campaigner highlighting the harm caused by excess sugar consumption in the United Kingdom, particularly its role in type 2 diabetes and obesity. In 2015, he coordinated the Choosing Wisely campaign by the Academy of

  • Why Health Is Not Determined By Our Healthcare System with Paulette Jordan

    22/07/2020 Duração: 01h02min

Why Health Is Not Determined By Our Healthcare System | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and AquaTru We can’t expect to create healthy bodies if we aren’t growing healthy food. But our food system is broken and involves many barriers, especially for underserved communities like North American Indigenous people living on reservations. I talk a lot about the overwhelming burden of chronic disease. Unfortunately, tribes relying on government commodities (white sugar, white flour, and white fat) are among some of the most susceptible to those illnesses and we’re now seeing them fare much worse against COVID-19 as a result. For that reason, food sovereignty is an extremely important topic of our time.  Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sit down with Paulette Jordan to talk about her experiences as a proud member of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and what kinds of changes are needed in order to reverse the health issues that Indigenous and other populations like these are facing at increasing rates. Paulette

  • Supplements: Useful Or Useless? with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

    20/07/2020 Duração: 46min

Supplements: Useful Or Useless? | This episode is brought to you by Audible Even with a perfect diet, the combination of many things—including our depleted soils, the storage and transportation of our food, genetic alterations of traditional heirloom species, and the increased stress and nutritional demands resulting from a toxic environment—make it impossible for us to get all the vitamins and minerals we need solely from the foods we eat. And large-scale deficiencies of nutrients in our population—including omega-3 fats, vitamin D, folate, zinc, magnesium, and iron—have been well documented. So what do we need to know when it comes to combating these deficiencies with supplementation? In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss common nutrient deficiencies and what you need to know about determining what supplements are best for you. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice an

  • How To Move Through Difficult Emotions

    17/07/2020 Duração: 11min

How To Move Through Difficult Emotions | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley The body and the brain are inextricably linked. So when we suppress our hardest experiences and emotions, they linger in our bodies and hold more power over us. Befriending our emotions and facing them head-on provides us the support and space to heal our emotional wounds. And using our physical state to change our mental state, and vice versa, is an incredible tool for moving through difficult emotions and attending to our overall health and wellbeing. In his conversations with Tom Bilyeu and Dr. Jim Gordon, Dr. Hyman discussed specific strategies to do just that using simple physical exercises and practices. Tom Bilyeu is a filmmaker and serial entrepreneur who chased money hard for nearly a decade and came up emotionally bankrupt. To that end, he and his partners sold their technology company and founded Quest Nutrition—a company predicated not on money, but rather on creating value for people with the mission to end met

  • Are Cows The Cause Or Cure For Climate Change? with Robb Wolf and Diana Rodgers

    15/07/2020 Duração: 01h02min

Are Cows The Cause Or Cure For Climate Change? | This episode is brought to you by Tushy, ButcherBox, and chili If you’re confused about meat and its relationship with the climate, human health, and animal welfare, this is the podcast for you. These topics have been extremely conflated and many have turned to veganism as an answer. Unfortunately, it’s not so simple. And a black and white approach to diet can be dangerous not only for our individual nutritional needs, but it can slow much-needed progress when it comes to truly supporting and protecting our environment. There’s no doubt that factory farming should be illegal, but that is a far cry from stating that all meat is bad. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy I’m thrilled to sit down with Diana Rodgers and Robb Wolf to talk about the nuances of regeneratively raised meat and how it can reverse climate change, support better health for those that eat it, and provide natural and caring conditions for the animals it involves.  Robb Wolf, a former research bioche

  • What Really Causes Autoimmune Disease with Dr. Todd LePine

    13/07/2020 Duração: 38min

What Really Causes Autoimmune Disease with Dr. Todd LePine | This episode is brought to you by AirDoctor Autoimmune diseases are a huge issue, affecting over 80 million Americans. They include type 1 diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, colitis, Crohn’s disease, and dozens of others, but they all have one thing in common: The body attacks itself. Conventional medicine uses pharmaceutical drugs to treat autoimmune disease but fails to answer one simple question: Why is the body out of balance to begin with, and how do we help it regain the proper balance? Functional Medicine, on the other hand, applies a personalized approach to treating autoimmune disease providing a map to find the root cause underlying autoimmune disease. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating autoimmune disease, and lupus specifically. Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing i

  • Why Food Companies Make Unhealthy Products, And What We Can Do About It

    10/07/2020 Duração: 17min

Why Food Companies Make Unhealthy Products, And What We Can Do About It | This episode is brought to you by Four Sigmatic Here’s the simple truth: Food companies are in business to make money. If people eat or drink less of their products, they lose. This is the primary reason for why Big Food seeks to hook  consumers and keep us coming back for more. The food industry approaches food as “engineering projects,” with the end goal of creating “heavy users”—a disturbing internal term used by food manufacturers that helps them make as much money as possible at the expense of public health. But as more and more consumers demand healthier foods, many companies are working hard to meet that demand. So how can we support this innovation and reward companies who are trying to do the right thing? Dr. Hyman explores these topics in his past interviews with Michael Moss and Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian. Michael Moss is a New York Times investigative reporter turned food-focused journalist, Pulitzer Prize winner for Explanator

  • Why Obesity, Hunger, And Malnutrition Are Found Together In The Same People with Tom Colicchio

    08/07/2020 Duração: 01h01min

Why Obesity, Hunger, And Malnutrition Are Found Together In The Same People | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and AirDoctor Coronavirus has got us thinking about a lot, including many parts of daily life that may not have crossed our minds before. A big one of those topics is food, and with unemployment at an all-time high, we’re seeing many people who need to utilize food stamps to help make ends meet. Unfortunately, the SNAP program (food stamps) caters to the purchase of cheaper, calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods over healthy, real, wholesome foods. We see that people who are food insecure and rely on programs like this are actually much more likely to be overweight or obese. The “N” in SNAP is for “nutrition,” and while there are SNAP benefits at beneficial food institutions like farmers’ markets, the program still has a long way to go to serve public health.  Our food system is in desperate need of change, and as we look at current conditions in our world from COVID-19, we also see that

  • Postmenopausal Hormones: Helpful Or Harmful? with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

    06/07/2020 Duração: 34min

Postmenopausal Hormones: Helpful Or Harmful? with Dr. Elizabeth Boham | This episode is brought to you by AquaTru Women experiencing menopause are not destined to suffer from hot flashes, impaired mood, muscle loss, poor sleep, memory difficulties, and sexual problems. Menopausal symptoms are signs of imbalances in your sex hormones; they are not the result of mutant genes that destroy our vitality as we age. Instead, they are treatable symptoms of underlying imbalance in one of the core systems in your body. While conventional medicine commonly jumps to prescribe hormone replacement, Functional Medicine seeks to figure out the “why” – what is causing the symptoms and how can you treat the underlying problem. While sometimes this does include hormone replacement,, the important thing is to find the way to replace them that most aligns with your body. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating symptoms of menopause. They also discuss

  • Decolonizing Our Food System

    03/07/2020 Duração: 14min

Decolonizing Our Food System | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley Many of our sustainable farming practices actually stem from African and indigenous roots. However, the division of land, government subsidies, and financial resources that are available favor white farmers. In fact, since 1920 African-American farmers have lost over 14 million acres of land. This decline of Black, Brown, and Native farmers has had far-reaching negative impacts. It means a decline of wealth and continued generational financial hardship. It means a disconnection from history and cultural practices that connect people to the land. It also means that these communities don’t have access to the same fresh, healthy foods as predominantly white communities In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses these topics with Leah Penniman. Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol educator, farmer, author, and food justice activist from Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY. She co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010 with the mission to end racism in the f

  • How To Overcome Sugar Addiction with Keegan Allen and Tom Hopper

    01/07/2020 Duração: 01h08min

How To Overcome Sugar Addiction with Keegan Allen and Tom Hopper | This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and chili I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone say they wish they had more willpower to be able to quit sugar. But here’s the thing: it’s an actual physical addiction and the food industry strives to get us hooked on sugar. So, it’s not about willpower, it’s about biochemistry. The great news is that we can reset our biochemistry and those sugar cravings and take back our health. The more you avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates (which just turn into sugar in your body) the more your body recognizes the natural sweetness in healthy foods like blueberries or even a red bell pepper.  My guests on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, Keegan Allen and Tom Hopper, have both been through the sugar struggle, and they’re here to share their inspiring stories of overcoming the addiction to discover their most vibrant health.  Keegan is an American actor, musician, photographer, and author. So what causes brain fog? The key insight is that your brain is not just some object sitting on the top of your shoulders. Your brain is an organ that’s connected to everything else happening in your body. And fixing your brain starts with fixing your body. When it comes to brain fog, that usually means attending to your gut health.  In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating brain fog. They explain why brain fog is so inextricably linked to gut health and how brain fog can be triggered by a range of things from diet to allergies to autoimmune conditions to environmental toxins and much, much more. • How To Stop Stress From Controlling Your Life

    26/06/2020 Duração: 14min

It can often feel like stress is all around us. Stress can come in many different forms. Socioeconomic stress is a real burden for many people, as is the stress of taking care of several generations within a family, or meeting the demands of our jobs. Stress can also come in the form of bad food and poor or inadequate sleep. In all its many forms stress leads to inflammation. And inflammation actually kills the brain cells that help us make good decisions, and it makes those in the fight or flight part of the brain grow. This leads to anger and opposition and supports negative behavior and decision making. Dr. Hyman explores how stress can lead us to make unhealthy choices in his recent conversations with Drs. Rangan Chatterjee, Austin Perlmutter, and David Perlmutter. They also share information about what we can do to stop the negative effects of stress in our lives. Dr. Rangan Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential doctors in the UK and wants to change how medicine will be practiced for year

  • What’s Wrong With The Business Of Politics And How To Fix It with Katherine Gehl

    24/06/2020 Duração: 01h05min

What’s Wrong With The Business Of Politics And How To Fix It with Katherine Gehl | This episode is brought to you by Four Sigmatic and Thrive Market Politics is Big Business, there’s no way around it. We’re in an extremely divisive time, and we used to be able to get things done with a much more bipartisan approach. In the 60s, voting patterns were greatly blended, but they’ve only continued to move further apart since then. This hinders things like improvements to public health in favor of private gain. You know I always want to find the space for positive change, though, so I was excited to sit down and talk about solutions for improving our current political system on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy with Katherine Gehl.  Katherine is a business leader, writer, speaker, and political innovation activist. She was president and CEO of Gehl Foods, a $250 million, high-tech food manufacturing company in Wisconsin with approximately 350 employees. Prior to joining Gehl Foods in 2007, Gehl held a range of po

  • Treating The Underlying Causes Of High Blood Pressure with Dr. George Papanicolaou

    22/06/2020 Duração: 39min

Treating The Underlying Causes Of High Blood Pressure with Dr. George Papanicolaou | This episode is brought to you by AirDoctor Almost a quarter of the worldwide adult population has high blood pressure or hypertension. An additional third of American adults have what is called a pre-hypertensive condition. Hypertension is a leading cause of heart disease and can lead to kidney failure, stroke, dementia, and more. Conventional medicine typically treats hypertension with medications which is generally effective in reducing risk of these complications. However, these medications frequently come with unintended side effects. Functional Medicine, on the other hand, seeks to get to and treat the root cause of whatever is causing hypertension. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papanicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating high blood pressure. They discuss how things like diet, sleep apnea, insulin resistance, and more are often the driving forces of hypertension. George Pa

  • How To Live In Flow-Motion

    19/06/2020 Duração: 12min

Yet there are tools waiting within all of us that can connect us to our purpose—and show us how to share our unique gifts with the world. In his conversations with Reverend Michael Beckwith and Dr. Andrea Pennington, Dr. Hyman explores how we can connect to our highest selves through simple practices, even in the face of relentlessly hostile messages from society. Reverend Michael Beckwith is the Founder and Spiritual Director of the Agape International Spiritual Center, a trans-denominational community headquartered in Los Angeles, comprised of thousands of local members and global live streamers.
