Originally from Montreal, Kaia Kater went off to college in West Virginia to study the banjo and Appalachian music. The answers she began to find musically, only fueled her desire to find answers about herself, her roots and how she came to be. Trips to her father’s home country of Grenada proved to be the catalyst for not only her own self-discovery, but for the creative flame that inspired her newest album, ‘Grenades.’ Listen in as Kaia Kater joins Rocket Radio following her appearance at the Fayetteville Roots Music Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

With ‘Freedom’, the 5th Amen Dunes album, McMahon presented his already stellar songwriting in a slightly different package, one with a renewed sense of intent and it’s been widely praised as one of the best albums of 2018. Rocket Radio’s Adrian Spinelli caught up with McMahon at San Francisco Outside Lands festival to talk about inspiration, movement, musicality, surfers, painters and of course, ‘Freedom.’

Gold Star’s Marlon Rabenreither captures the essence of Los Angeles better than most. Born in Austria, he moved to the City of Angels at a young age, was raised there and still calls it home. Signed to E-40’s Sick Wid It Records, Peezy made a name for himself with a real sense of the hustle and fight to get to where he’s at now. From Tulsa to Chicago and across the country, Campdogzz’s second LP, ‘In Rounds’ is inspired by the roads they’ve traversed. Singer/guitarist Jess Price is a powerful songwriter and the band’s never-ending confluence of guitars is distinctive to say the least. They’re the first band signed to Cursive’s 15 Passenger Records and ‘In Rounds’ is no doubt one of this year’s standout records. Six albums and 36 band members down the line, BJ Barham and American Aquarium have arrived at their 7th release, ‘Things Change.’ The album is an apt reflection of the changes Barham has made in his life to get to this point: Sobriety, starting a family and a new lineup for the band. But there’s been on constant the whole time, Barham’s no-nonsense songwriting that has always resonated and are a staple of their Carolina Americana. We caught up with Barham in San Francisco to talk about the new record, the influence of Jeff Tweedy and the life changes that were necessary for the longevity of the project.
