Charles Omenihu added interior pass rushing production. Cullen Gillaspia was a battle fightin' special teams hero. Well, almost all of it. Lonnie Johnson Jr. was one of the worst cornerbacks in the league. Kahale Warring was too hot and too much of a CHAD for Bill O'Brien. And Xavier Crawford is no longer on the team. The Seattle Seahawks are in a similar position the Houston Texans were in last season. The major difference is Seattle can’t franchise tag Clowney and limit his ability to take off and play somewhere else. That being said, Seattle can choose to keep Clowney around long-term, or do what Houston did, and choose to let him play elsewhere. The Houston Texans have never won a Superbowl. They haven’t even been to a Conference Championship game. Maybe one day they will. Who knows. A lifetime ago, we were laying on our carpets in August, grating the dog hair into puffy little mountains, and imagining what the 2019 NFL Season would look like. What happened was more interesting than the little stories we told ourselves. Josh Allen would become the most entertaining quarterback since Lamar Jackson, who was the top predator in a beautiful offensive ecosystem. Jameis Winston would join the 30-30 club and throw 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. The Rams would miss the playoffs and watch in horror as the 49ers go from worst to first. Derrick Henry won the rushing title and turned cowboy karaoke into a Toby Keith song. After decades of success, the Patriots' offense finally fell apart, like all things eventually do. This Tennessee Titans run is not sustainable. Ryan Tannehill is averaging 9.2 yards an attempt. Derrick Henry is averaging 7.92 yards a carry in the third quarter. Their redzone touchdown rate is 79.5% with Tannehill at quarterback, and more specifically, they've scored 31 touchdowns, kicked 1 field goal, turned it over 3 times, and have 4 drives that ended because of the clock. A mystical experience must meet two qualities. It must be ineffable and have a noetic quality. Mystical experiences also tend to be transient and passive, but these aren't requirements. It’s the last week of the 2019 NFL regular season. These are the last games of the decade. A few years ago a read a book this time of year called Young Once. It was a french novel about a man revisiting the set of circumstances he met his wife in. It was ok. The title was better than the book itself. Yet, whenever nice round numbers of time come to an end, I can see and hear the title in my head. Young Once. Ahh, yes, that was us this past summer and now it has all come to an end. Young Once. The Buccaneers are the NFL equivalent of a hallucinogenic experience. A holographic sheen covers all things: deep passes, missed open receivers, turnovers, so many turnovers, big blitzes, receivers running uncovered downfield except against the Houston Texans, silly rush attempts in short yardage situations, and it all, of course, coming down to a final possession. After embarking on a game against the Buccaneers the opponent may have epiphanies, come to realizations, and gain a deeper understanding of those things that have been eluding them.
