Over the next three weeks, we will see that God has designed his church to grow up into full maturity in the faith by means of graciously working together as a unified and Spirit-empowered community. While this certainly sounds like a beautiful picture (and it is!), it doesn’t take long to realize that for a group of diverse and sin-prone people, this is no easy task. Although we have already been given a new identity in our salvation and stand completely forgiven in Christ, we now must learn to live out our new identity by walking in a manner worthy of the calling we have received (4:1). The first steps along the path of this new life in Christ are comprised of a charge for us to cultivate the kinds attitudes and actions which promote the unity of the church. These heart and life postures include such things as humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another in love. These Christ-like characteristics are the threads that, when woven together, create a bond which is not easily broken. As o

For a lot of people, Christianity can end up feeling like a bait and switch. This is because lots of churches share the good news of God's unconditional love for sinners who trust in Jesus as the on-boarding message of our faith, but not the on-going message of our faith. When it comes to spiritual growth, it seems that they forget their own roots and begin living as if the gospel that brought them in was only a boost to get them on their way and that now its up to them to produce results. Beloved, this is not true. The God who saves us by his grace is the God who strengthens, empowers, and transforms our hearts by his grace. The path of spiritual progress is not trekked by self-reliance but by God-reliance. It is for this reason that Paul bows his knees before the Father on our behalf. Before he begins to call the church to live out their faith in radical new expressions of God-glorifying obedience (Ch. 4-6), he first calls upon the God who alone is abundantly able to powerfully work within us to bring this

More than anything else, the Apostle Paul's heart ached for God's people to recognize that Jesus Christ is worth it all. Before he launches into the application section of Ephesians (Ch. 4-6), he pours out his soul once more in the hope of convincing us that this gospel of Jesus Christ is better still than we have yet begun to realize. Next week we will consider the incredible prayer that Paul initiated but then paused at the start of v1, but first he endeavors to explain the immeasurable glory of participating with God in the ministry of this gospel. By doing so, he not only helps us make sense of the call for Christians to be faithful in suffering for their faith, but he also exalts the "unsearchable riches of Christ" before our very eyes such that we ourselves might be more captivated in the depths of our own souls to gladly spend our lives in the cause of Christ. This week's sermon draws Ephesians 2:11-22 to a conclusion by driving home the truths that we have explored over the past couple of weeks. At the center of it all is the reality that each and every sinner who believes in Jesus Christ is born again to a new identity as a fully fledged member of the Church. No longer are we defined by our earthly heritage, our many failures or former sins. Now, in Christ, we stand as equals alongside all other true believers from every age. Paul explains that both Christ's work and Christ's Word--which, together with Christ himself are the one and only foundation for the Church--are the solid rock upon which the people of God are established, justified, adopted, sanctified, and persevered unto glory. This sermon covers the important and often difficult question of the relationship between the New Testament Church and Old Testament Israel in Christ. There is much to learn within this very complex subject, but one of the most important things is to recognize that the Old Testament and New Testament are not two separate stories, but one continuous story in which Jesus Christ is both the central figure and Cornerstone. Through the Cross, Jesus has inaugurated the New Covenant era, having fulfilled all that was temporarily foreshadowed and anticipated throughout redemptive history in the Old Covenant. Thus, we now see that in Christ, all true believers from every age comprise the one, eternal, blood-bought people of God, the True Israel of God and Church forevermore.
