Last Night At The Carlyle

Annnd, we’re back! We are so excited to announce that Last Night at The Carlyle has finally returned for a third season. On today’s first episode of 2020, Sara and Matthew welcome Erik Davis, Managing Editor of Fandango (which is celebrating 20 years btw), to chat Oscar predictions and what movies to watch for in the coming year. From their thoughts on all the nominees and films from 1917 to Parasite to Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, you do not want to miss this prior to the golden statues being handed out this coming Sunday. Then, we enjoy a glass of bubbly and chat all things Champagne with Didier Mariotti of Veuve Clicquot. Didier holds the impressive designation as the House’s eleventh Cellar Master and guardian of the House’s spirit. Listen to them discuss how Champagne is made, what foods are best to pair (Truffle Fries? Oysters?) and why you should be drinking it out of a white wine glass and not a flute. Sara and Matthew are ringing in the holiday season with the founders of Beaumont Etiquette, Myka Meier & Anne Chertoff, to give us all a little brush-up on our bar, table, and party etiquette. Myka and Anne also let us in on the best kept etiquette secrets when it comes to dating, tipping, toasting, and the answer to why the millennials are selling out their much-buzzed about formal dining classes.

On this week’s episode, Sara and Matthew sit down with legendary singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and record producer, Michael McDonald (Doobie Brothers & Steely Dan). Hear him chat about his first Café Carlyle residency, the courage of playing solo and what it’s like to play acoustically in a small venue while jamming with musician John Pizzarelli. Michael also humbly discusses how he found his musical talent as a young child while playing his grandmother’s piano and singing “Love is a Many Splendored Thing” with his father. Hear him also wax poetic about the magic of New Orleans and how music and the arts are what truly make us all human.

On today’s episode, Sara sits down to chat with The Carlyle’s Chef Concierge extraordinaire, Waldo Hernandez. Hear him discuss his passion for The Carlyle and the guests that stay there, what’s happening in the city right now – from the top New York hot spots  (newcomer Frenchette to old-standby the Polo Bar)  to the latest Broadway buzz (he’s seen Hamilton seven times) and he’ll also share a surprise announcement too. Waldo will also discuss how former Carlyle concierge, Dwight Owsley, taught him so much when he arrived at the hotel. We will also hear from Dwight himself and listen to him impart some of the knowledge he gained over his 36 year tenure at The Carlyle and the concierge philosophy of  “friendship through service.”

We'd like to take a moment to formally introduce ourselves to our listeners and also reveal how the "Last Night at The Carlyle" podcast originated. Sara Gore & Matthew Miele interview each other and Earl Rose finally takes a break from the piano to tell us a little bit about himself! Plus, our producer, Jennifer Cooke chimes in how she got to the Carlyle along with a surprise guest from the "Always at The Carlyle" documentary just being released in the UK today!

Gina Gershon took a break from her two week residency in the Cafe Carlyle, strolled into Bemelmans Bar, and talked us up about tequila, Prince, U2, "Cocktail", sleeping till the afternoon & why wild women don't get the blues! Might have something to do with "goin' hard"?  Catch her at the Cafe before her residency is up this Saturday. 

We'd like to dedicate this episode to appreciate Anthony Bourdain, an inspiring man and a unique voice, who ponied up to the bar at Bemelmans and lent us his words for an interview in our documentary, Always at The Carlyle. We have decided to air this extended interview (even a touch of our conversation during set-up) as we raise a final glass to Tony!

The duo known as the gold standard of cabaret, John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey stop by Bemelmans to talk a little swank about their numerous performances in the Cafe Carlyle, how they make a marriage in the jazz world work, and their brushes with music royalty. Then, we'll feature an extended interview with Regis and Joy Philbin from the feature documentary, Always at The Carlyle, now in theaters in select cities!

William "Will" Guidara is a restaurateur based in New York City and co-owner of Eleven Madison Park, just voted the #1 Restaurant in the World! He'll share what he learned from his dad, as well as his mentor and fellow restaurateur Danny Meyer, not to mention his genuine affinity for magic. Then, hear a live panel discussion following the debut screening of Always at The Carlyle with Carlyle regulars and extended family--Stellene Volandes, Editor-in-Chief of Town & Country and Whitney Robinson, Editor-in-Chief of Elle Decor. 

Actor, Director, Writer, Producer Paul Feig flies in from Capri and zips straight over to Bemelmans to fill us in on the behind the scenes funnies on the set of "Bridesmaids" and "The Heat", how to make his favorite martini, and his hope for the comedy future.  

Tony Award Winner Lena Hall pops over to join Sara and Matthew with the ever pleasant Earl Rose underscoring a lively banter about spirit animals, singing competitions, and her quest to be labeled an EGOT! Lena will be followed by a brief chat with Jon Hamm from The Carlyle's signature Empire Suite from his interview for the “Always at The Carlyle” feature Documentary premiering May 11th. 

On today’s episode, Sara and Matthew share tequila gimlets and mixed nuts with Laura Brown (Editor-in-Chief, InStyle Magazine) at the magical Bemelmans Bar (which BTW reminds Laura of Barbie’s Dream House) while chatting about a hundred different topics ranging from growing up on a dairy farm in Australia, to catching up with Serena Williams in the backseat of a car, to making your own luck! Laura also discusses things she loves which include her Versace men’s hoodie, wine, spaghetti, and Leslie Jones. We’ll also hear Sofia Coppola (Director, Producer, Screenwriter) discuss why she loves shooting and living in fancy hotels as told to Matthew in the upcoming documentary, Always at The Carlyle. Today’s episode features the legendary Eric Ripert (Chef & Co-Owner Le Barnardin and Aldo Sohm Wine Bar) Chef Ripert talks with Matthew and Sara about ordering the perfect dirty martini, kissing stingrays in the Caymans, inspiration versus intimidation in the kitchen and what dish of his mother's he cannot replicate. Additionally, designer Vera Wang gives some insight into her personal and professional history with The Carlyle, as told to Matthew in the upcoming documentary, Always at The Carlyle. 

Bernie Williams (former New York Yankee and four-time World Series champion turned Latin Grammy nominated guitar player) joins Matthew and Sara to chat about playing his first residency at Cafe Carlyle, what goes through his mind when he hits a home run and his self-described 'lamest line' he had in a Seinfeld episode when he appeared alongside Derek Jeter.  Additionally, hear one of the preeminent rock musicians of our time, Lenny Kravitz, share some of his early memories of listening to Bobby Short play at The Carlyle, as told to Matthew in the upcoming documentary, Always at The Carlyle. (Coming to theatres May 2018)

Our inaugural episode welcomes fashion icon, Isaac Mizrahi. His amusing chat with Sara and Matthew includes talk of why he orders Rosé spritzers, the reason he likes performing in the intimate Café Carlyle, and how long is too long to stay at a party. Additionally, Isaac explains why it’s taken him six years to write his memoir and whether or not he answers the door in his bathrobe. Anthony Bourdain also imparts his knowledge of Bemelmans Bar as told in the hotel’s upcoming documentary, Always At The Carlyle.
