We have reached September and it is time for the playoff push. A few teams (basically the who AL) have an idea where they will end up in their respective race. The only real race going is out West with the Athletics 3 games behind the Astros. In the NL it will be wild till the end. All division races are within 3 games, and out west its even tighter. The Rockies are within two games of a spot in the wild card and only a game and half away from first place in the west. The AL West will likely go down to the wire as the A's remain 2.5 back of the Astros. The Cardinals have jumped into the first wild card spot in the after a good weekend in Colorado and the Brewers hold on the the second spot. Eight teams in the NL are now either in a playoff spot or within 2.5 games of one. In the AL the Astros were able to hold their 1.5 game lead over the A's. The Cardinals and Rockies are the hottest teams in the National League. The Rockies have pushed to within half a game back of the Dbacks and the Cardinals are only a half game back of a Wild Card spot. Both teams have used solid pitching and timely power to fuel their recent runs. The A's were tied with the Astros in first place after beating them on Satuday, a loss on Sunday dropped them back to 1 game behind but they are still hot on their heels. The Rockies and A's have been two of the leagues hottest teams the last week as they both sit a game back of first place in their respective divisions. The Rockies swept the Dodgers over the weekend and took game one of their series with the Astros in Houston. The A's have won 8 of their last 10 as they continue their charge to the top of the AL West. Injuries have hindered the Astros and the A's are taking every advantage. The NL Wild Card remains a frenze as the Brewers still hold the top stop. The AL West has actually gotten interesting as the Astros injuries have opened a door for the A's to possibly sneak through. The Yankees are still 8 back of the Red Sox even after winning 4 straight and still only hold a 4.5 game lead over the A's in the first wild card. A lot can happen with about 40-50 games to go for most teams. In the NL West the Dodgers and Dbacks continue to trade places or remain tied as they are now atop the division. Both the Braves and Phillies have followed a similar formula, as both teams were at the bottom of the league for quite sometime, gaining high draft picks and moving big names for prospects. Tom goes deep into the Red Sox and Yankees series from over the weekend. The Red Sox finished of the sweep of the Yankees on Sunday in the most hilarious way possible. Aroldis Chapman blew a 3-run lead in the bottom of the ninth and the Red Sox won on a walk off in the 10th. The Red Sox now hold a 9.5 game lead on the Yankees. The A's have also won six straight and are sitting in the second wild card. 2.5 games up on the Mariners and only 2.5 games behind the Yankees in first. On this episode of the GSMC Baseball Podcast host Tom Dougherty discusses the frenzy of trades that went down on deadline day around Major League Baseball. The Dodgers, Brewers, Pirates, Braves, Yankees, Rays, Dbacks and Mariners all made major deals over the last 36 hours. Brian Dozier went from Minnesota to LA, Chris Archer was sent to Pittsburgh for two talented young players, and the Braves solidified their bullpen with two moves to get proven relief arms. The Brewers made two major moves, first getting Mike Moustakas last week, then getting Jonathan Schoop in a deadline deal with the Orioles. The NL West has 3 teams within 6.5 games of first with two months of the season to go. The Dodgers have reached first place but can they continue to hold off the DBacks and Rockies? The NL East is similar with the Braves on the heels of the Phillies, and in the Central the Brewers are still right there behind the Cubs. The NL Wild Card is the wildest of all as there are about eight teams fighting for the two spots. The trade deadline is also coming up soon as there have already been some blockbuster deals so far. The Cubs have carved out a 2.5 game lead in the NL Central and have aslo aquired Cole Hamels from the Texas Rangers to sure up their rotation. A rotation that hasn't been as consistant as once hoped. In the NL East the Phillies also have a 2.5 game lead over the second place Braves. Both Clubs boast a roster of young talent with a veteran precence mixed in, that race may come down to the final week of the season. More trades have occured since the last show. The Yankees aquired J.A. Happ from the Blue Jays, the Red Sox snagged Nathan Eovaldi from the Rays and the Braves aquired Jonny Venters from Tampa Bay. On this episode of the GSMC Baseball Podcast host Tom Dougherty recaps all of the All Star action for Washington DC, and talks Manny Machado trade. He give a review of the home run derby that was won by hometown hero Bryce Harper who a dazzled in his final round performace, beating Kyle Schwarber of the Chicago Cubs. On the next day the All Star Game turned into a sort of home run derby 2.0. A total of ten homers were hit in the exhibition between the AL All Stars and the NL All Stars. Jean Segura hit a three-run homer in the 8th to break a 2-2 tie. Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett tied it in the 9th with a homer of his own. The AL took the lead again with back to back homers by Astros teammates Alex Bregman and George Springer. Hometown hero Bryce Harper will look to win for the first time in his first appearence since 2013 when he came in second to Yoenis Cespedes.
